We are heading back to Houston from Panama City / Destin, FL in two days, and are considering a stop for a day or two in Louisiana. We'll be taking I-10 the whole way, so it needs to be within an hour of the interstate. Where would you stop for a day or two and why? It will be my wife and I and our 6-year old daughter, so it needs to be kid-friendly (i.e. Not a casino trip, unless they have a kid program that would interest her).

Check out the St. Francisville area north of Baton Rouge. There are a lot of plantation homes with Bed & Breakfast, tours, museums, other girly frou frou stuff and a really nice Civil War park. And the BR zoo is in that area as well.

Yes, it is not just a drunk fest 24/7 there are lots of things to do in the city that might interest a kid (french market, shops in the quarter, zoo, aquarium)

Very "overlooked" area is New Iberia. You could take the tour of the rice mill (Konriko) where rice is ground up the old way, then head to Avery Island and see Jungle Gardens, then go to the Tabasco plant. Then on the way home, bring the little one to I-10 park in Jennings to see some live aligators, and hit the beach at I-210 in Lake Charles.

The St Francisville area is a great idea but the B&B and most everything else are booked up right now, they are filming a movie there, as of last weekend. Try the Shade Tree Inn (B&B) in St Francisville just to make sure, they are in the heart of things. You can stay in Zachary and drive 20 to 30 minutes. As FFF said New Iberia would be good, Konrico, Tabasco, etc.

not exactly sure about the location but its in town, major motion picture, not unusual. I live in Central City and I just found out two weeks ago they were filming a movie across the street at at my neighbors house, 35 acres on a river. i was wondering what all the shooting and explosions were, for the Sci - Fi channel.

I second the recommendation to stop at the I-10 park in Jennings to see some live aligators. There is a lady that works there that will give your a talk about aligators and let everyone touch a baby aligator.

The information is very informative and interesting......I thought I knew a lot....but learned even more. She will talk for 5 minutes or 45 minutes....what every you want.

Go to Heberts Marina on Big Lake and rent a cabin from Andre/Rachell Abadie, only 30 minutes south of Lake Charles and while your there you can book a fishing trip for you and the family! If you don't want to fish you can't beat the relaxation and scenery around the lake.

Well, we decided on NOLA, so we are at the Astor Crown Plaza at Canal and Bourbon. Any of y'all familiar with the French Quarter and Riverfront area, please post up places we can go to eat and catch some live music, where a 6-year old will be OK. :)

My wife and I took my youngest one to N.O. this past weekend for a night and stayed at the Crown Plaza. Since he is 6 and has special needs we are very limited on what we can do with him. Visit the Kids Museum and the Aquirm of America. If you walk out from the resturant in the hotel..I think it is call Burbon Street something....you are basically on Burbon...just hang a right out of the door. Pool their is kind of small. PS: off of Iberville ST which is right off Bourbon like 1 block from the hotel their a seafood and steak place. It starts with a D. You cannot miss it since it only like one block down off Iberville. Food is great. A lot of places in that area are tourist traps.

N.O. has an awesome Zoo, their used to be a river boat near the Aquirm of America's where you could get a combo pass, one to see the Aquirm, then the river boat would take you too the zoo and it's real affordable. I took my young un's to the zoo a couple of months ago, it was my first time there, real impressive and unbelievably clean, was amazing to me.

If you leave that area without eating @ Deano's on Iberville St. which is one block off of Bourbon, you need to be beat w/ a stick. Get the BBQ shrimp for sure and enjoy! Everything there is awesome!

I second the Insectarium, Aquarium, Zoo, You can even ride the boat over from the Aquarium over to the zoo. I haven't heard a bad restaurant named yet. Deannie's is awesome. Have a good trip.
