i have a minkota riptide trolling motor and today it died. i was trolling in the marsh and hit a couple of mud spots not too bad. well i started drifting with the current. next time i fired up the trolling motor it was making a wierd sound. I know this sounds funny but it sounded like a race car. it would take a while to get to full speed and sounded like it had pipes on it. well i was hot and got tired so we shut it down and came home. when i got home it won't do nothing now. checked all the wiring to batteries and connections. any one have any ideas?? its only about 2 1/2 years old.

had the same problem with mine, where the prop is, there is a nut there, go to wal-mart and buy a trolling motor accessory kit, its got the nut wrench, an extra nut and a few shear pins. You sheared a pin in your motor, when you take that nut off, you'll see what im talking about. Take the prop off and the pin will be in 3-5 pieces. Get the replacement package either at wally-world or academy and problem solved. Along with a 6-pack and its as good as new.

no it ain't that that was my first thought. (it has happened before.) The motor won't even turn on you can't hear it running or anything. has to be something electrical or something. Do these things have a warranty?

Did you check the reset switch on the little box connected to the positive post on the battery? Happened to me last week.

no fuse in the head. should of had a breaker inline. might have burnt the control unit up or maybe the motor. they do have a warranty which is 1 year.

If it ran ,Then ran w/ a lot of noise . Then won't run at all.
It sounds like water got in the foot and the motor is kaput.
Take it in if its under warrenty and let the shop pull the foot down and check for water . Seen a bunch that hit bottom or stumps and cracked the sealant that is on the threads of the shaft where it screws into the foot.

brought it to dhp marine in lake charles. he said by what i said happened it sounds like the brushes (i think thats it) over heated and melted. they haven't called me yet so i don't know if that was it. and it was under warranty. thanks for the help guys.

DHP is the best in this area they do good work. I always order all the parts for mine from them and work on it myself. Glad you got it fixed.

Hey Fence make sure you put a inline breaker in there. I know they are a pain in the butt it could save you $$$ in the long run

Brought it back to dhp guy turned the knob and it worked. he said i guess it fixed it's self. I said i guess not. so we started taking it apart. the boy was very helpful once he figured i wasn't just going to leave.

anyway found out that it is a plastic piece on the 70lbs (which i have) that holds the brushes in place. any higher than that in trust it is copper that holds them. if you use your trolling motor on high as i do on big lake fairly often it melts the plastic and makes the brushes stick. when it cools down they weren't sticking. anyway fixed it and gave me a spair. he said they are suppose to be issuing a fix on it.......So this being said don't buy a 70lbs riptide.. go to the 80 or 101.....if you do have one don't lug it in mud or use it on high very long. the marsh is what got mine got stuck in the mud
