View Full Version : Well, it's about to be a new year - How about a weight loss challenge?

ShadMan

How many of y'all are going to diet starting January 1? I know I am! Wanna have a competition and see who can lose the largest percentage of body weight?

Post up if you want to compete so I can get a list together. Then you will need to send me your starting weight on or after January 1, and provide an updated weight each week (please use the same scale each time you weigh). I'll keep track in a spreadsheet and we'll see who has lost the highest percentage of body weight by the end of February. There may even be a prize for the winner. ;)

Who's up for it?

My goal is to drop about 40 and get back to 220 or so. Back in my athlete days, I got up to 210 with about 6% body fat. If I can hit 220 now, I'd be happy. :)

Thats almost the diet I use when i'm trying to lose, throw in a sweet potato for lunch, or some brown rice for carbs, 6 oz of lean meat, a cup of greens every meal, plus 2 protein shakes with 40grams of protein each a day. eat a total of 6 meals possibly 7 a day. 45 minutes of cardio a day after 45 minutes of weight training.

First year at la tech I went from 300 to 225..... And yea i looked like a crackhead!!!!
Lol
I played at 245-250.
I'd like to get down to 265-270.
I'm 300 now.
Being on the road, skipping meals, eating late don't help. That's my issue.....in October I didn't eat fast food or fried food at all.... Dropped 14 lbs.
Then thanksgiving and all the other parties started up and I put it all bk on.

:*****: I just weighed in yesterday for the first time in a couple months and the first two numbers were 27* for the first time ever. I guess I need to revise my long-term weight loss goal to 50lb. :(

So, how many people are going to join the challenge? We need at least 6-8 to make it worthwhile.

Also, what diet is everyone doing? I think my wife and I are going to try South Beach this time. I've done Atkins a few times in the past, but I think South Beach will be easier to maintain longer term. I can handle Atkins for about a month or even two, but I simply can't go without some of the foods I love permanently. :) I lost around 30lb in 1.5 months on Atkins last time I did it, but it all came back within 6 months of going back to my bad eating habits.

My parents have been on a diet now for a couple of months with pretty good success. U can eat whatever u want as long as u keep it under 2000 calories and they some kind of drops everyday and exercise 3 nights a week. Mom has lost almost 50 lbs and dad 45. They have turned it into a competition and both seem much happier. I will post information about the drops if anyone would like it. All I k.ow is that its a hormone pc some kind to speed up metabolism

i found an app for the iphone that seems like it could be very helpful. It is called my fitness pal. It has a diary for your workouts and what you eat. If you enter your stats it tells you how many calories you need to intake and how much exercise you need to do to achieve your goals. The best part of all is that the app is free!

Guys, I found a really cool website for tracking your diet progress, and monitoring how others in our group are doing. Go to fatsecret.com and sign up for a free account, then post up with your username and I'll add you to the SaltyCajun.com group. I've been clicking around in there, and there is a lot of good stuff to help with a diet. You even select the type of diet you're following so others in the group can see which diets are working best, etc. Make sure to enter your correct (as of yesterday or today) starting weight so we are all starting at the same time. Every Monday we'll have our weigh-in, and we can see how well each other are doing. It'll also save me a lot of time working on a spreadsheet. ;)

When I get it, you'll be on my buddy list, then I can send you a group invitation. i wouldn't consider those two meals failure. i think in order to make this lifestyle change you have to do it in steps. If you deprive yourself of all things tasty you will just end of up truly failing in the future. I would just take this slight slip and use it to your advantage. Exercise more this afternoon and make up for it.

Yep, work had me travelling the first few weeks of the month. Had about a week and a half of hard-core cheating while on the road, but have still lost a considerable amount in the two weeks or so I've been doing Atkins (first and last week of this month).

i have been doing some pretty extensive research on making this lifestyle change. One of the common themes I am seeing is that it is imperative you eat enough calories. Apparently, there is a thing called "starvation mode" that your body can get into if you are not eating enough calories after you factor in the calories burnt from exercise. I can attest to the fact that since I started upping my calorie count to make up for what I burned I have been losing weight at a more rapid pace. I would suggest logging all your calories on either fatsecret.com or I use myfitnesspal.com. MFP has an app for the Iphone making in quick and easy. Seeing what goes in and comes out everyday not only makes me accountable it also has helped me get the most bang for my buck. Sorry for the long post I just want to help if I can.

Thanks for the help bro, I've read the same thing doing a little research myself and I think that I'm going to do that if things don't get better in a week or two. Need to shock the system somehow. In '08 I lost 100lbs, I gained 60 back and I've lost almost 20 since Jan 2... I'm doing almost the same thing now as I did then so last week kind of confused me... Maybe it was just a glich.

I haven't weighed myself in a while. I'm pretty sure I put back on the little bit that I lost at the beginning though. My schedule's been outta whack with the baby coming a month early, trying to finish the house so we can move in and everybody cooking a bunch of food for us and bringing it over since we don't have much time to cook for ourselves. Makes it a lil difficult to stay on track right now. As soon as we move into the house I'll be able to exercise and not worry about waking the baby or my wife so that'll be a huge plus.

Yeah everyone seems to be slacking a little. I know Yak'em can only weigh himself at my house so I know why he hasn't posted. After about the first week of this competition this weight lose thing became about me. I am continuing after it is over. We should keep posting, we might inspire others to start or continue their own journeys.

Don't have a scale at my parents. But I can tell I've lost at least 5 pounds since thurs. Gonna try and find a scale

You really should weigh on the same scale Austin. Not really too accurate if you use a different one.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I weighed this morning and I am down to 241.2. That is 27 pounds down for this competition and 30 pounds down overall. I am pretty pumped with the achievement. I hope maybe I can inspire someone else to start this journey. It is not nearly as hard as you are making it seem in your head. I still eat good everyday and haven't done much different other than exercise. Portion control becomes easy once you get past that first week or so. Exercise becomes as addictive as food used to be, with a much better result!

I'll have to weigh myself, I think I'm still holding at around 234-235. Now that we're somewhat settled in with the new house and the baby, it's time to start running and excercising so I should hopefully start dropping some lbs.

Just weighed myself, 236.4. The wife and I started walking around the neighborhood yesterday, will start jogging Wednesday then after a couple weeks I wanna start jogging in the morning and walking in the evening. I also started taking the stairs up to our office on the 3rd floor instead of the elevator so that should help a little bit as well. I'd like to get below 200, been awhile since I've seen 19....

Since I was finally able to really get things kicked off about 1 1/2 or 2 weeks ago, I'm down 5 lbs to 231 and that's just by watching what I eat really. Today I'm starting to walk/jog around the subdivision so hopefully they start coming off a little quicker now.

Just wanted to give everyone an update. I am officially 60 lbs lighter, as of this morning. I have been jogging 4 miles a day since sometime in January until two weeks ago when I started P90X. I have seen dramatic changes in my ability to do the workouts in just two times doing them. I am loving these workouts thus far because they kick my butt. Anyone wanting to get started on a this lifestyle change just needs to make up your mind and do it. The emotional and physical changes you go through make giving up all that bad for you food worth it. I still eat good food, I just eat less of it and not as often. Good luck to anyone else who is on this journey, I still have another 20 lbs or so before I will be happier.

05-10-2011, 12:33 PM
Awesome job Lucas! I did P90X for about a month but with my work schedule it was too hard to stay in the routine because I would have to skip a few days every now and then. It's definitely a badass workout though!

between this thread and the QUIT SMOKING THREAD...i have finally made the jump and decided to begin my beast mode and hopefully giving up cigarettes for good. I'm not too bad off, just decided to not let it get any worst then it already is.

My main objective sounds somewhat easy. I'm already at my ideal target weight, 185, just not the 185 i want to be..lol. tomorrow morning i will be signing up to the gym, so hopefully that'll keep my mind off the marlboros.

im hoping between summer school and the gym, my urges to smoke will be kaput ASAP...

also will be starting to eat oatmeal/cereal/whole grains in the morning and to up my meals and take whey and multivitamins---

Booya, if you really want to stop smoking, try Chantrex. My wife used it and quit after 40 years of smoking. She said it was painless and worked great.
