I have only owned THE BEST "YAMAHA". I have owned an HPDI....great motor....but as my slogan says it all.....4 Stroke Yamaha.....need not say more!!!!

I commercial fish & crab and have run almost every motor on the market, but out of the 2 you listed Mercury has given me the least problems and the best fuel economy.

A lot of commercial fishermen I know have gone to Tahotsu(spelling?) and Suzuki.
Before 4 strokes, they mostly ran Mercury and Evinrudes.

both are good, but both have weaknesses, i give the 4 stroke to yami, but you CANNOT beat the fuel economy of an opti, if you can prove me wrong. and those who say the optis blow up alot... well that was true at one time, but you yall need to look into how many hpdi blow. but either way the market has come along way for direct injection, the fuel econemy is awesome. but still give me my choice and its a carb 2 stroke, be it yami or merc, but those v-4 yammis are really hard to beat

no....i think he's saying he gives the 4 stroke market advantage to Yamaha and the 2 stroke market to the Merc Opti.

I've run both, currently have 4 stroke Yamaha....really can't go wrong with either.

He has tried every prop pitch and diameter and found the best one for his application. We both use our boat for crabbing and my boat has more power and gets better fuel mileage. His motor has had some major problems, (dumping fuel out of the breather) and I have heard of some other motors in the 90 to 115 range to have problems also.

A buddy of mine had a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke with less than 200 hours that had 30 psi compression on each cylinder. Mechanic said he could not figure out the problem. He changed his oil every 6 months and never run the motor over 4500 rpm. He went bought a 2 stroke and hasn't had any trouble since.

Just recently rode on a boat with new Merc Verado. That engine is the daddy!! Easily trumps my yammy f150. It is more quiet, seems to be more fuel efficient, and is quicker. I guess that supercharger works! I think they finally got the kinks out of it.

Yes you are right DI are the best. I went fishing with a buddy of mine recently that had an OPTI and he got 7 - 8 mpg.

I get 3 to 5 on my Yamaha 150, depending on the speed.
Running at different speeds, last two times I ran my boat around 95 to 100 miles, I burned 24 gallons of gas. I thought that was good.
My old 200 Mercury on a 21 ft. Proline deep V boat got around 2 mpg fishing offshore.

running at an average of 5K rpms (41-43mph) with a full load...3 men, fuel 44gal, 162 qt ice chest and gear I get a SOLID 4 miles per gallon with my 4 stroke 150 Yamaha. BTW, my boat has a dry weight of 1,700#...I think that is great fuel economy based on my comments. NO way a DI will get better...PERIOD...

I'd say 2 stroke Yammy for reliability and weight. But I run an old Evinrude now. They don't make them like this anymore :( I sure would love for a 70 horse Yammy 2 stroke to show up at my door. I'd have the Ugly Mudda runnin' again.

Never said they were more economical. Maybe they are. For the yearly servicing the 4 stroke will cost a little more to service than the DI motors. But you need to constantly by oil for the DI motors which is about $20-25 a gallon. BTW, I do not think 4 strokes are faster. When comparing speed you have to compare apples to apples for a given situation. I am not a fisherman on the bass circuit so I really do not care about blazing speed. For me, if I can get out the hole fast (which I can) and do close to 50 with a full load (which I can) that is all I need. As I stated before I had a 150 Hpdi on my old boat. Good motor. Now I have a 4 stroke. Again, based on my experience, I perfer the 4 stroke. I was once like you and kept talking myself out of buying a 4 stroke on my first boat. One last thing, the only reason I got the Hpdi on my first boat was because the dealer cut me a deal and knocked off $1,750 if I went the DI. If all things were equal or close to equal it would of been the 4 stroke hands down.

You must be talking about the MERC 4 stroke Verado......I will take the little added weight for fuel economy, no oil, no smoke, no noise. Also, based on Yamaha weights.....the 150 4 stroke is actually 2#'s lighter then the 150 HPDI. On the larger motors the 4 strokes are about 8-10% heavier then the HPDI. 225 HPDI = 539# compared 225 4 stroke 583....
As far as CARB motors....well those are history. Yamaha still makes a 150 one.

No motor will out perform the XS series of motors from Mercury. And I mean the ones that come from Mercury Racing. In 2.5 years of fishing a 250XS 3 to 5 days a week I have had zero problems. If you try one you will be hooked for life.
