I use power pro and personally I have never tied a leader on. Too much trouble and an extra weak spot in my opinion. So what do you use?

Flourocarbon
Mono
None

Is there truly a big advantage? Do specks/reds/flounder shy away from line?

Flounder and reds don't seem to care about tying jighead to braid....but specks seem to shy away a bit so a leader helps with trout. I use 20lb big game.

I really don't think it matters much unless the water is super clear....hell dink caught trout with a steel leader.

We fish mostly fresh water in the midwest and west, but our catch rates have gone up tremendously since switching exclusively to fluorocarbon in 2006. We do fish the inshore waters of LA or FL for 4 weeks or so each year, and it seems like our catch rates are up there also since switching exclusively to fluorocarbon. I will occasionally put a steel leader on, but only if something toothy like king mackerel or shark is a likely customer.

The fluorocarbon is often the weak link in the system, and occasionally we lose fish to line breaks, but we've reduced this considerably by retying all the knots every day and checking the leader for nicks and frays. However, it does seem clear that we lose fewer fish to leader breaks than we lose to having them not bite in the first place due to more visible line.

Good info guys. Guess I'll have to try it. I'm guessing 3-4' of leader?

I use about 2 1/2 foot of leader.....don't care for using one longer and have the knot banging through the guides.

Never tried fluoro leader on top water. Always heard it sank too much to use on top water?

For your leader or mainline? If it is your leader, what do you use for your mainline? You use the fluoro for top water too?

Had it proven to me a couple of years ago in Hopedale that trout can see the braid in The winter time gin clear water. Couldn't beg a bite while the back of the boat was smoking em. As soon as i switched to a leader the bite was on.

I use a long leader , long enough so when I reel bait all the way up to first guide my uni-uni knot is just before the reel, I fish mostly w 7' rods. I use such a long one so if it gets chaffed close to the lure I can snip off the bad part n just tie on lure w/o having to re tie uni-uni

Fish don't care. I sorta think that flouro is a way to boost your confidence. I use a big game 30lb mono leader with a tony or a quick swirl.
