My wife and I will be starting our first gardens (three of them) this weekend. Plans are (2) 4'x4' concrete/cinder/CMU block raised gardens in full sun and to at least partially refurbish the previous home owner’s 4’x24’ raised garden. The 4’x24’ is on the north side of our property against a fence running east-west, that does not cast a shadow until extremely late in the day. This garden is, however, under a very large and tall tree. The good thing is that the tree is so tall, that the lowest branches are at least 30’+ up so the garden gets a good morning sun. Currently, the garden is overrun by weeds and what looks like green onions and herbs that I can not identify. I presume the previous owners at least grew onions and herbs there. There’s no way the previous owners (older couple, household of 2) grew 100 sq ft of just onions and herbs. LOL

What are some things we could grow there in the shade?

You could put a hill of cucumber on 2 outside corners and let them run into the yard...I've done good with banana and bell peppers with sun only half the day. I grow them in front my house in buckets now so they don't take garden space and my house faces east so they don't get any afternoon sun...I've had cherry tomato's do well with only morning sun...
