Killing chicken trees

I need to kill some chicken trees along my fence line. I cut one down and 3 more pop up. I want those suckers gone forever. What's the best stuff to use on them and where can I get it around Lafayette?

Yup, don't take long, or if you cut them down, spray the fresh cut stump with 2-4D

I bought some property a while back with about 800' of fence line that was full of chicken trees and did this exact same thing and it worked perfectly. Within about 3 weeks, I could walk up to the stump and kick them right out of the ground.

You can also use the hack and squirt method. Hack it with a machete or cane knife and squirt a 50/50 round up/water in the slit while holding the slit open. You need to make one slit per inch of trunk diameter. If making more than one slit make sure you are working your way around the tree, not up or down.

Chicken trees are trees that go dormant in the winter. The poison method works better during the spring and summer. You can cut and paint on 24D also.

The way they did it in the old days and what I still do is to ring them. I got one now drying. What ya do is ring the tree right above the ground cutting a groove through the bark and inner layer to the wood in the center. I have used this technique on chicken trees and willows and trees at the camp I wanted for fire wood next year. By ringing the tree the roots continue to try to suply the tree and it bleeds to death killing the roots. Takes a while I ring them then wait till the tree is dead then cut it down. We used to ring trees at the hunting camp we wanted to use for fire wood next year at the end of the season. By next season they were dried standing.

One more quick question: I have half of a 2-1/2 gallon jug of Super Concentrate Killzall in the shed. Will this work in place of the 2-4-D?

HA! If I had a fence line of trees like that I wouldn't be trying to kill them! What I'm talking about is the Chinese Tallow tree. People call them chicken trees around here.

One more quick question: I have half of a 2-1/2 gallon jug of Super Concentrate Killzall in the shed. Will this work in place of the 2-4-D?

Yes. Killzall is glyphosate (roundup) As said above you can hack Slits into the tree and pour the concentrate on the hacks, you can go around the tree drilling at an angle with a 1/2" drill bit and pour the concentrate into the holes or you can go ahead and cut the tree down and paint the stump with the concentrate or drill holes in the stump.

If you paint the stumps it needs to be done within 30 minutes. Best to do it as soon as it's cut.

I have a dead one I wringed standing in the yard now that the cool front finally came through I will cut it up and add it to the fire pit wood stash.

At our shop we have a bunch on the Vermilion River Bank. We just cut them down yesterday and sprayed them with 2-4-d. That stuff is great.
