My choice would be to have water on one side of the cut and dry/very little water on the other side (for geese). Basically water spots between some of the clumps of mud. Also, plow the field. For big duck season I like water completely showing and keep it no more than 8-12 inches of water. Teal & mallards....ie puddle ducks like very little water.

Thanks All Star Rod, We have the open field blind locked in with the farmer that will have water in the front and the field behind will be drained to next to nothing...just as you described. Now that it is final I will post as the season goes and let yall know at least how that part of Kaplan is. Thanks again for all the help. I am sure I will ask goose related questions later because that is new territory for me.

When I saw your pictures Mallard matt it reminded me of a teal me, my Dad and two of my brothers shot. I knew one of them had a picture it just took a few days to find and load. We all shot at the same time because of a miscommunication of who would shoot and when on this poor bird. After one big simultaneous shot the result was no head...believe it or not there was no head to be found.

dont worry about nothing being planted in the field. Rice only stays good for about 30 days after it hits the ground. After that the only thing for the birds to eat is the stubble and roots and that is preferred by the geese. A field that has natural weeds growing in it is better because the seeds are more harty and last longer than rice. I have had much better luck when my field was set aside as compared to when in rice.
