Another law that might be good to know right now for any guys headed offshore:

Quote:

RECREATIONAL RED SNAPPER SEASON TO CLOSE FRIDAY, AUG. 14

Release Date: 08/11/2009
The recreational season for red snapper will close this Friday, Aug. 14 at midnight, in Louisiana and federal waters, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) reminded fishermen today.
All red snapper must be landed and on shore no later than 12:01 a.m., Aug. 15. No possession of red snapper by fishermen on the water is allowed after that time.
LDWF Secretary Robert Barham announced the season in May following the announcement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that red snapper season would close in federal waters on Aug. 14. LDWF chose to enact the same closure date for Louisiana waters to enhance the effectiveness and enforceability of NOAA regulations and to ensure the recreational red snapper quota is not exceeded in the 2009 fishing year.
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) estimated that recreational fishers in the Gulf exceeded 2008's annual red snapper catch limit by approximately 1.2 million pounds and federal law requires that harvest levels must be reduced in the year following a previous year's over harvest.
To offset last year's over harvest, the NMFS shortened the 2009 recreational red snapper harvest season in Gulf federal waters (beyond three nautical miles from shore) from June 1 through Sept. 30 to June 1 through Aug. 14. The fishery will reopen June 1, 2010.
Approximately 97 percent of all red snapper landed in Louisiana are caught in federal waters.
Secretary Barham was authorized by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission at their January, 2009 meeting to change or modify opening and closing dates for the recreational red snapper season in Louisiana waters to comply with changes or modifications in season dates in federal waters. This action ensures that regulations in state waters will mirror regulations of NMFS for federally managed waters.

OK, sorry. I thought someone would have told you. NEVER, EVER keep a redifish 3 miles outside the beach in LA, or a drum for that matter.

boatdriver 08-22-2009 10:32 PM

Good ol wiers......oh boy

Not to offend JSmoke, but I wish MORE people would get the A$$ caught behind those signs. If I had a game warden on speed dial and I knew he was close, I would DEFINITELY be calling him to burn that person. READ the signs!!! They have been there for the past 3 years. :pissed:

longcast 08-22-2009 10:36 PM

no sign

there is no sighn at the first weir from heberts.can yoou tie up to the weir.seen lots of people do it.

boatdriver 08-22-2009 10:40 PM

You are right longcast!! That is owned and operated by Miami Corp. Grand and Lambert are operated by Cameron Prairie NWR. The next weir south, Mangrove Bayou, is the same, owned by Miami. NOtice behind the wiers how you can't fish but maybe a half mile north of Grand. Cameron Prairie is bordered by Miami to the north and east, and private landowners to the south and west.

longcast 08-22-2009 10:42 PM

thanks

i ahve fished behind the weirs in some other peoples boat, but mine is brand new and to scared to put it through grand.any other way to go back there besides grand

Gerald 08-22-2009 10:48 PM

Nope....that is the only place to get back in the marsh.

Yes, it is a little tricky when there is a good current. When you get the boat lined up straight.....give it the gas and get through there quick.

When the water is moving good.....that is the best fishing.

Fishing outside Grand Bayou you will loose lots of tackle. Inside is not quite as bad.

Two of us, caught about 20 reds there Friday.

Negative. Also, a tidbit of info. The teflon "bumper" to the north of the gate between Grand and Lambert is gone. That would be a real no-no on a new boat. Hammered the reds back there in the marsh 3 days in a row with the high tide.

LaAngler 08-22-2009 11:18 PM

nice haul

jsmoke222000 08-23-2009 05:01 AM

I'm headed back out right now. I'll post a report when I return.

huntin fool 08-23-2009 09:23 AM
