I read about this a couple years back. Ford was going to use a diesel provided by Land Rover. Dodge is supposed to use a new build by Cummins and Chevy is supposed to make their own. Dodge and Chevy were supposed to come out in 2009 and Ford in 2010.
I have the 1999 F-250 7.3L diesel. It is 11 years old. The cost of the diesel is not bad if you keep the truck long enough. If you trade every 4 or 5 years and you do not pull anything, it would be a waste of money to invest any extra money in the diesel engine.
I have a friend who had a 1997 F-350 that had 800K miles on her. All he did was change a few clutches and a radiator. Hurricane Rita took that one out. He got his money's worth out of her.
WHen diesel was $4.50/gal., it still didn't hurt me. I didn't have a $500 note like most of the guys I work with. And I get 20 mpg on the highway. That ain't bad for a 3/4 ton truck.
If you keep the truck till it costs you too much money to keep her going, then get a diesel. It will definitely save you money in the long run.
I have invested in a new clutch at 175K miles. I have bought 3 sets of tires, one fan belt and 2 sets of batteries in 200K miles. That is all she needed in 11 years besides oil and filters.
I am hoping to get another 5 years out of her, then find a small truck to scoot around in, but I will keep the 3/4 ton to move our tractor between Cameron and Lake Charles with. The old Ford will stay with me until she dies.

yea them old diesels were good before our goverment stopped that. New ones now only get 10 to 15 mpg unless you change them.

It is the first truck that I have ever kept longer than 3 or 4 years.

I had a Dodge diesel for 4 years, but back then, it was too loud and vibrated too much.

I have been working for a dealer that sells or sold all three Chevy, Ford and Dodge for the past 12 years. I started pulling wrenches then service manger, parts manger and now salesman. The old 7.3 was and is the king of diesels. As for whats out right now we see far fewer Duramax diesels in the service isle than the other two. I have pulled so many cabs on the Ford and Dodge I can just about do it in my sleep. Try to calm down a customer that sees his $60k truck cab off the frame up in the air on the lift and that his heads are shot at 12k miles. It's not a fun task. I will happily sell anyone which ever they want but if it's my dollar the Chevy is the only one I'm buying. GM did have a half ton diesel ready for the showroom before the gov. changed emission regulations again. All the new diesels will have urea(spell) injected that will have to be recharged at the dealership every few oil changes that will cost about $60 a pop. So it was scrapped for now.

Also Slip Knot I have a 2003 Expedition with 50k miles and have never gotten better than 15mpg and thats going down hill with the cruise set to 55 and 30mph wind to my back. If you are getting anywhere close to 20mpg thats about 5-6 mpg better than I have ever seen on any Expedition in 12 years run that thing till it dies.

I think I still have all the info on the Chevy half ton diesel in my desk. If I can find it I will post on Monday.

Waste of old technology trying to pass off as something new. Remember the old Isuzu pups? Them things got sick gas mileage in a little 4 cylinder. Guys, don't fall for the Obamacrap about making the world green. This techno been around a long time. Just my 2.

Back in the mid 80's a buddy had a Chevy Luv 4X4 with an Isuzu 4 banger diesel. That was a bad mofo. he got 35-40mpg on the high way and it pulled my 20ft Cuddy all over with no problems. He drove it all thru college and for at least 5yrs after. I would love to see a compact 4X with a small diesel built again. would look at buying one for sure...SK

Ford scrapped their diesel and GM doesn't have a clue, started researching this summer. Sorry to burst yo bubble.;)

UPDATE: October 16,2008 - PickupTrucks.com is now reporting that we may in fact not see a F150 diesel model. Or, if we do it may be delayed. Apparently Ford is considering the EcoBoost option as a better alternative.

I know a shrimper that had an Izuzu Pup diesel. The body fell apart long before the engine did. Great little engine.

I had heard that toyota is supposed to be coming out with a 3/4 ton with a cat diesel in 2010. Havent heard much about it lately though. Its good to hear some of yalls thoughts on these different engines. I will probably be in the market here shortly for a good older used diesel. Preferebly 1 ton or more dually to pull my gooseneck. It seems I keep getting bigger,heavier pieces of equipment for my business. Then I need a bigger trailer to haul them, then I need a bigger truck to pull them. Lol Its a vicious cycle. RIght now Im using my dads old 96 dodge with the v-10. Pulling a load,Im getting about 4.5 miles to the gallon.

ford will be putting the 6.7 scorpion diesel into the 3/4 and 1 tons, standard 750 pounds of torque..

i'm sorry but i'm not buying another vehicle from obama and the unions' government motors.

ford also has direct injection technology on the way for the triton gas engines, this should increase hp and fuel mileage.

Just read about it. Totally new engine, totally new turbo, totally new transmission.

From everything I have heard about $60 every oil change or so.But can't get a straight answer from Ford or GM.

I do know that all the six speed smaller transmisions from Ford and GM are exactly the same inside only cases different. :confused::confused:
