Some of the horses that are at the NFR right will go anywhere from 50-100k. The horse that Cody ohl is riding there(Pearl) is one of the best I've ever seen. You can get a pretty decent one around here for 10-15k that good for a high school kid and some amateur shows. Web you compete on that level it's a whole nother story. I've seen some of them last 10 years if well taken care of. I believe Shane's horse that he's on now has lasted a good while but he gets the best of the best treatment. Vet bills, injections, shoes, grain and hay all add up fast. When I quit diesel was 2.90 a gallon. I can't imagine their fuel bill a month goin full time. Not to mention the $100,000 rigs they drive. There is no way these guys make it unless they have great sponsor.

Buddy of mine used to rodeo a lot and his girlfriend did too. He team roped and she did barrels. If I member correctly, the last horse she bought was about $240,000.

A lot of the guy's that I know that used to travel to ropings around the southern states have gave it up for the reason Cody said. Travel cost.

How long does it take to get a candidate to the point they can compete? Do they remember you when the training is done? Are they a horse or robot in the arena?

Lol, I knew this was where you were going. Id say very samilar to dogs. A 6 month minimum in the pratice pen before they seen a rodeo. Some progressed fast others were slower. Just like any other animal if they love it they can do both. Enjoy being in the pen and enjoy just being a horse. I always thought of mine as a partner. If you watch Shane rope you can tell how much he loves that horse and he knows he wouldn't be near as successful without him.

MarshRat89 12-08-2013 08:09 PM

It's not uncommon to see 1d barrel horses going for 50k though

Yes, I was talking about the horses at the NFR. You can get by with a lot cheaper if you not riding pro. I never had those caliper of horses. Mine was more on the 15 to 20 level with a much smaller trailer. I was blessed enough to have have full rides scholarships for college and great parents to support me going down the road. Trust me its not cheap but neither is robot dogs and duck hunting.

How much per month? I just might get me some Shetlands and trainem to be ropin horses. They have a midget cowboy rodeo association?

cajunforeman 12-08-2013 08:19 PM

Lol, u gonna have out hands full with those mean little suckers. I'd say easy $300-350 a month to maintain a horse that you rope on.
