In APBA racing circles, we called the OMC's either OMSleazy's, or Waukegan Shakers:shaking: Only outboard in APBA that would absolutely rattle itself totally apart, bolts laying in the pan. That is why in APBA racing, the SST60 and the SST45 Class, Rule #1: It must be an Evinrude or Johnson, no other brands may compete.
I wonder why they made that rule:eek: Oh yea, that's so they can say OMC has ruled those classes:confused: No competition.
In Formula 50, ANY manufacturers outboard of 45 cubic inches or less, OMC lasted 2 races, Mercury lasted 1 race. Both years of approved Formula 50, US1 and US2 for both years were Tohatsu's, EVERY APBA World Speed Record for Formula 50 was set by Tohatsu. Remember, ALL brands could compete.
Now tohatsu does not build a 2 stroke, talk about change.

Not any more. The new 4 stroke 40/50 replaced the TLDI.

Fish, you are absolutely correct, I apologize. Gonna be tough to sell TLDI 40/50's around here with the new 4 stroke. Don't get me wrong, I loved the old carbbed 2 strokes, that's all I raced. On a racing tunnelboat, I can still take the carbbed 2 stroke and spank any 4 stroke of the same or similar size, but, very few folks around here fish out of raceboats. Most of them like to race on the way fishing, but, that's on aluminum hulls. And I can assure you, an ecu controlled TLDI 42.5 cubic inch 2 stroke will not keep up with a 52.9 cubic inch ecu controlled 4 stroke. Just cannot overcome that 24.47% larger displacement:D

First let me say I am a Mercury man . But this ain't your daddy's OMC . The initial numbers on this thing are impressive . From fuel burn to oil consumption and a Massive amount of torque ! Oil tank on motor means more room in boat . Integrated steering , theoretically should be more durable due to less exposed moving parts . Electric shift .. Could save lower units from damage due to accidentally shifting in or out of gear at high rpms . 5 yr warranty is pretty strong for a brand new outboard. To me it means at least they think it is a good product . Beautiful.... Maybe not so much .
The torque is what impresses me the most . It should slingshot any bay boat out like its nothing . And the potential to turn a Bigger prop for those of us that like to cover some ground . :)
But in the end only time will tell . I will be watching
