what is a good lock on for hunting in the marsh.. smaller tallow trees and such? usually just use 15' ladders that sway like a mofo in the wind but the higher the better! any good advice for hunting the marsh would be great.. thanks in advance

Feesherman 06-12-2012 08:45 PM

I use a ladder in the marsh on those tiny tallow trees. Use climbers on all other places. Another shout out for the muddy harness! Love mine, nice and cool in september. The HSS is hot as heck. And on distance, I have only shot 4 deer with my bow so far and the furthest one was 20 yards. Two of them were straight down under me.

Go to bayoubucks.com and ask. Nothing bit hardcore hunters over there. Especially bow.

I have been to bayou bucks and it is a wealth of knowledge for bow hunters.

I was just trying to spark a conversation here.

Jabeaux 07-01-2012 10:35 AM

I've shot at two deer with my bow. 1st kill was a 3pnt at 38 yds, then last year I missed a spike at 8 yds. That's right 8!!! Yds!!! Still ticked off at myself.

SHORT SHANK 07-03-2012 11:05 AM

88 days and a wakeup and I'll be sitting in a tree in Cuero, TX. I been slingin' arrows
since about 1986 and killed my first buck last year (spike). I've killed quite a few does because I got a habit of shooting the first thing that comes in range and I doubt that I'll ever change. As far as I'm concerned, any bowkill is a trophy. Good luck this year Bluechip and remember to follow through on your shot!

Bluechip 07-03-2012 11:11 AM

Thanks SS.....I'm going to try and get with someone to watch me shoot and see where I can improve.

I'm an amateur but love slinging arrows.

Bow hunting is super addictive, especially after you kill a few. You won't want to hunt with your guns anymore.

Bought my new rig the other day. Can't wait for season.

I just purchased my first bow as well. A PSE Stinger, can't wait to start practicing. Thanks for all the great tips here. The bow will give me 5 extra weeks in deer season here and everyone tells me once you start you will never go back to rifle. Been real busy with son's wedding and things are just getting back to normal so time to get out and start practicing before I take the bow course in August. Some real nice pics here of some fine bucks.....gonna try and take this fat arse black bear with it in September.

Cheers and safe hunting everyone

Well practicing has been going fairly well. My buddy and I practiced for a few hours and he showed me how to hold the bow; however, the first one I flung at the target...OMG , did it ever hurt..take a look at this love bite :pissed:

Guaranteed, I will never do it again....practice makes perfect I hope

BassAssasin 07-16-2012 07:59 PM

Ouch!

Bluechip 07-16-2012 09:04 PM

Ouch....keep slinging them arrows...

Gerald 07-17-2012 01:38 AM

You have got to keep the wrist straight.

Red Devil 07-17-2012 05:09 AM

Craig, are you shooting a drop away rest? If so, how do you like it? Any complaints? I'm thinking about going with one on my next bow and try to get away from the Whisker Biscuit!

Jay, I put a QAD fall away rest and have never had any problems with it, Ripcord make a nice fall away rest as well, I love my QAD though. I get all my equipment from Danny at Outdoor Specialties in Lake Charles, go by and talk to him, very nice guy, he has probably forgotten more about archery than most people know. He will set you up in his computer that will give you all kinds of info.

Yakbum 07-17-2012 08:30 AM

X2 on outdoor specialties. Had my Mathews completely set up there. Danny's service was great.

Yeah, I bought my bow from another dealer and went with a buddy of mine to pick up his new Matthews from Danny, we probably stayed in there about an hour just shooting the bull with him, he had so many tips and techniques and he will share all kinds of knowledge with you it doesn't matter if he just met you or if he has known you forever, was around may so he wasn't to busy like he normally is just befor hunting season. Even since then anytime I want to have anything adjusted or added I always bring my bow to him..Jay if you do go see him I recommend going very early as you can during the year, if he is not busy he will rig it all up for you and have you shoot it in the shop to see if any adjustments need to be made to anything, he will also be looking at every aspect of your form and release as well and how the bow is fitting you, the closer it gets to hunting season, his shop will be full of people and bows at all hours during the day...

Yes I am.....I have no complaints so far. When I bought the bow I was going with the Whisker Biscuit but everyone told me that I would end up switching to a drop away, so I figured I would go with it from the start.

I have the QAD Ultra rest HD.

This is my set up...minus the Bone Collector stuff

Doin a lot better now with practice....trying to get an hour a day in and starting to get pretty good patterns, will send a pic next time out. Lesson was learned with the wrist, it will not happen again.

I used to watch them give you a hard time on LAS. But I always laughed because you were one of the few that consistently posted pics of deer with an arrow through them.

Wrapped tight or not, you have definetly stuck some deer.
