How do you like that boat? I have seen a few bigger ones for sale and thought they looked pretty nice.

1995 17ft Louisiana Traveler
1995 70 Hp Evinrude
back is done in pvc material with aluminum bracing.
In its hey day I took this boat from Bayou Sorrell landing, up the Atchafalya River,
to Morgan City and back up the Intracostal on 11.999999 gallons of gas to break it in.
Use to run 38 mph with wind to your back helping you on a light breeze day with no ripples on the water.

Now she is old, fat, and slow but still gets the job done.
Pic of her at Toledo Bend.
Did finally change trollmotor to a Motorguide 12volt digital 54lb trust stainless shaft and how it kicks tail now.

i really like it... really good in the shallow marsh. if i could do it again i would get the 18 or 20ft... extra width would help out alot with getting around the console. but it does everything i need to do for sure.

With the motor, gas tank, battery, and driver in the back, it takes forever to get on plane. So redistributing some weight my help. Any ideas on handy little improvements you have made?

I put my 12 gallon gas tank on the floor all the way up front in my 15' Alumaweld, then built a simple 3/8 inch plywood box to fit over it to keep the sun from deteriorating the plastic. There's a 3" lip around the top to serve as a tray. This turns into a place to put my tackle box, lures I'm using that day, sunscreen, pliers, etc. within easy reach.

My Igloo is right across from the tank, so between them both, I never have to worry about all the weight at the back when I fish alone and never have porpoising problems. Battery is still behind the rear seat.

Grab rail is so you can stand up and drive and have something to "Grab" on.

Looks like a mount for a GPS on there. I can't make out what the 2 things on the side of it are.

guess I should said that differently because I was more curious of what was mounted on it and it seems way forward to drive with tiller handle.

Bdub 03-16-2013 08:42 AM

Thanks guys. I run standing up most of the time using a tiller extension and that grab bar. It makes running in chop alot easier on your back and allows you to have a better vantage point for finding clean water, bait etc.

I use a strongarm Etec tiller extension but may end up with a carbon marine version to save weight...
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y25...ps5a7710f7.jpg

On the grab bar I glassed up a little dashboard/console that is what u see in the pic. It has perko navigation lights, trim buttons and fish finder mount, and also I have a cushion that goes on the front and on the cooler for a passenger there.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y25...psb2e25a00.jpg

I still need to wire up the fish finder and a few other accessories but I keep putting off the projects so i can just go fish...been doing good without em

weedeater 03-16-2013 10:03 AM

I think you "Bdub" and Hydro have two of the neatest set ups I have seen on a jon boat. I am running a 40 Nissan on a older tunnel but would like to sell and do a combination of yalls boats on about a 18x48 with my motor

Is that a universal extension? I need one on mine, straddling that bench in the back to stand up makes a nice tender spot on the inside of my calf!

This one is specific for the Etec with friction fit around the tiller handle and has a hole for the tilt switch, www.strongarmproducts.com They also make a universal one. http://www.shallowwatersolutions.com/ also makes some good stuff.

Thanks guys, I'm actually in the middle of fighting a trailer wiring issue so I can get out on the water this weekend...too nice out!

Went looking for hydros boat but didnt see it in this thread? How skinny do you run with that thing?

weedeater 03-16-2013 11:13 AM

with me, merc, tackle and everything else (around 600lb) it jumps up in around 6" of water and maybe less depending on bottom..... great for chaseing reds and I am ready to take it to Laccasine

Bdub 03-16-2013 11:41 AM

Nice, I almost ordered my boat with a tunnel but I didn't want to have any problems crossing open water in a chop, my boat has a few degrees deadrise at the transom
