If it ain't the briars....the down trees / tree tops make for some tuff walking. It may take a few more years before you it gets back to "Normal" at Sherburne.

OH.....and most of the ditches are full of water this year and you need hip boots to cross them.

I know last year i had a spot that was full of turkey year before but too much water. i couldnt even get back there last year. i sent in my lottery app yesterday. hopefully i get picked. myself and none of my buddies got picked last year. i went after the lottery last year and called in a few hens but no toms. i went in from butte larose last year but usually go in from krotz springs.

i got a bunch in the hills of st francisville that i usually get 1 out there a year. but with all those hills its tough walking and hard to get a turkey to cross a ridge or 2 to come meet u. i called back and forth with this one and his buddy from daylight to 11am. finally, i had enough and snuck up on him and smoked him with my 10 gauge.

I just wish the Turkey "season" was longer.

I usually do as much scouting as actually hunting.

Have you ever hunted where the woods look like this?

In the second pic......I kill a Tom that was by the "V" looking tree.

The 2 rd pic.....is the big tree where I was sitting. I could not cross the bayou to get any closer, so I had to get the 2 Toms to come to me. I killed him about 2 hours after first hearing them gobble just after daylight.

21 lbs and 10.5 inch beard.

That look like a spot I hunt in Sherbune! Is that Sherbune?

specktator 03-02-2010 10:18 AM

Went out to Sherbune last week to do some scouting. Way too much water. Gonna have to bring a boat if I wanna get on some gobblers out there.

Yes.

You are hunting MY spot?

I am not sure if I will be hunting Sherburne this year.......I have had lots of fun chasen the Toms there. It all depends how I do at CC.

Going to go scouting at CC in the morning.....it should be a great morning, if the almost full moon does not effect the gobbling. It was fairly light outside before 6 AM this morning due to the moon light.

Haha off of Iron Gate Rd?
Too flooded back there this year!

One area that I hunt has several ditches. To hunt the Toms, you must be able to cross the ditches.......and they are too deep to cross now unless you want to swim.

I am sure that lots of areas are covered with water now....and hunting will be tuff with limited access to large areas that a hunter can get too.

I thought that area was a little higher than most areas.

I have not been in that areas in a long long time. Roads use to be very bad and very muddy. I almost got stuck way back in there......just before dark, during the week. Knowbody anywhere on the place to help if I would have needed help. Not a good feeling.

Maybe using a pirogue is the way to hunt there this year.

specktator 03-02-2010 03:21 PM

Yeh we talked about using pirogue. I might try on my mountain bike. U know run the atv trails to try and locate one. I might take my boat across big Alabama and see if I can find some dry land. Everywhere I went last week on KS side had not much land till u hit water. I have got on a whole bunch of birds back there where u had those pics. Went ride out there last week the canal is too high for hip boots and all the woods heading back there are full of water.

Luckily, I have a lease in St Francisville where I can usually get at least one bird or my chances would be pretty slim if I was depending on Sherbune.

I have heard that there are a lot of bird in that area, but I come from I-10 most of the time and don't get to that area.

I wonder how much water is in the old "Duck Lake" area? Or to the north of there. The only real dry area might be along the river.

Have you ever been east of little A?

No I only hunt turkey on Sherbune. This is my third year hunting out there. So I don't know the area very well. I'll take any tips on other possible areas. I came in from I-10 last year on one hunt saw 3 hens but didn't hear a gobbler walking the atv trails.

Feesherman 03-09-2010 01:13 PM

Anyone hunting West Bay? I can put you on a turkey that I found this past Saturday. I will not be going back.

Asterisk-Rich 03-09-2010 01:35 PM

last year was my first time going. i went by my self and called a gobbler right up to me...needless to say i am now hooked! NOTHING LIKE STALKING YOUR PREY!!!

Gerald 03-09-2010 02:20 PM

I talked to a friend that works at one of the local plant.

He said that some of the guys there have been doing some Turkey scouting and calling the Toms to there location. They said that was "cool".

While that maybe "cool"......I bet that Tom will not be fooled a second time. Calling to a Tom before the season opens is a NO....No.
