But the shelf is within sight distance in the keys. These fish are uncommon 25 miles off of Cameron. I never doubted the fish.
I doubted the depth. Sounded like a fish story cause of the story.

Yea I herd he had got one, I did not know they broke down. Did not look like his big 24 skeeter from that pic. Sounds like they had a very good trip. Heading out Sat. Trolling ballyhoo, haha, never know. Might get a bill up.

i don't doubt it was 25 miles, water looks the same as it did where we were at 25 last weekend. 50 foot out of cameron is how far? 30-35 miles? I've seen a sailfish around north oil city/tennecos before.

I have been working on it for 2 years and frankly I am sick of it. LOL. I pretty much rewired the whole thing last year.

Well we done a lot of fiberglass work on her last year and the hull is sound. Engines are in awesome shape surprisingly. It just needed some TLC. 12 foot seas?? Count me out! Although when I go out, I have a ditch bag with a radio, GPS and lots of water.:D

Yea.. I'll chime in...I've fished from SW pass to west of the Mermentau offshore...
I fish out of PI ALOT.. 15 miles So. of Rollover U will be in 47-50' of water.
I also know the farther west U go the deeper is gets faster. Verm. 119 which is 32 miles out PI you will be in 74' of wawa. I've stood on the bottom during Snap season while spearfishing there..

Entirely believable. I know of one caught just SW of Ver119 while trolling along a grass line looking for dolphin. It was probably about a 10-15 lb fish. It hit a feather jig and by the time they realized it was a fish on top and not a wad of sargasso it was dead. The only picture we had was destroyed when Rita "washed" our camp at Acadiana Marina. This happened in the late 80's.

I've caught lots of times Mai in 30-40 of wawa right out of rollover under grass mats. A friend caught a 75-85# sail in 70' of water many yrs ago on a drift line at old Verm 101 out of PI.. Water was blue from a having a drought that summer.

The important thing that we can conclude from this thread is this:
- No one knows anything about the water depth along the LA coast
- No one knows anything about what species of fish can be caught in certain depths
- Everyone is lying about everything
- No one is lying about anything
- Everyone knows everything about all of these things as well
Good talk.
Congrats on the fish (and the story)!

I'm thinking the fish was caught 50+ miles out and brought in to 25 miles rehooked and released. They just let it free swim until the camera was up and rolling and then the fight was on. All of this was done because they knew it would make a good salty cajun thread for the weekend. That's just what I gather from all of the evidence.
