There are several large cranes across the street from me but I'm not sure if they are Sandhill or Whooping. They are constantly making that annoying sound. Pretty sure these are whooping cranes though.

DUCKGOGETTER 12-15-2011 02:21 PM

Look at the size of that sucker!

DUCKGOGETTER 12-15-2011 02:22 PM

A freind of mine killed some in texas and he said that when you wing them suckers it sounds like a airplane coming down.

Micah 12-15-2011 02:26 PM

What sound do these make? These cranes and whooping cranes look a lot alike except color. About 80% sure the ones I saw were gray but it was getting dark every time I saw em.

I'm just gonna see if I can find out what sound they make.

DUCKGOGETTER 12-15-2011 02:28 PM

Sounds kind of like a pidgeon kooing only louder and longer

I saw em last year about 200 yards south of the store/bar there in Holmwood, bout 100 in a field. I think the tally was over 1,300 last year for that whole area.

You guys also have Crested Caracaras hanging in that area, only place I have seen them in Louisiana, a really cool raptor.

Funny you mention that, there was/is a Gray Flycatcher that was spotted at White Lake and it was a pretty big deal, think it is still there if you want to see it and scratch it off you 'life list' of birds you have seen:) Only 2nd record for Louisiana

them crested caracaras are cool as hell to watch. Watched 2 last year in sweetlake snatch 2 snow geese out of a body. Me and my dad watched them from the road for about 2 1/2 hours just flying around then ambush them snows. By far one of the coolest things to watch in person.

There HAS to be a cajun name for those things. They only started breeding over here recently so maybe the old coonazzes didn't see enough of em to give em one of their famous names
