I'm going to say it's a young Eurasian teal. Very similar to your normal gwt.

Nice mount regardless.

That is a great observation... Way better idea than a teal/woodcock/pintail mix....

Take away the painted blue beak and feet, and voila! young Eurasian Teal!

How would a young teal be 2 times the size of a standard GWT?? Ya'll don't make any sense! Its a Hybrid, Doesn't look anything like a Eurasian. I showed the bird to someone with a Masters in Reproductive Sciences from LSU Vet and he believes it to be a mix. I can provide any of the nay-sayers his contact info.

Also, just to further satisfy the people who have never seen a hybrid in person and just wanted to say its a dressed up GWT. He has taken the bird to be viewed by his former professors and will get a final write up on it. I'll post their finding....

I should get an email back from LSU's Waterfowl expert later today. I will have no problem stating whatever he claims it to be. Whether its a hybrid or just a juvenile with unique plumage.

It looks like it's just a glare on the beak

I've killed or been around thousands of green winged teal drakes in my life. Never killed or seen one that looks like that.

Let me know when one of yall kill a green wing teal that looks like that, and as far as a eurasian teal, that would be just as rare as a hybrid. There is hardly any distinction between the green wing teal and the eurasian green wing teal. The few eurasian teal that have been seen in the US have been in Oregon.

It's clearly a green winged teal/pintail hybrid. Ask any reputable taxidermist that has been successful in the business for, lets say, 20+ years.

Here is another one http://www.zoochat.com/1118/green-wi...intail-215126/

Steve German has probably the only mounted pair of pintail/greenwinged teal hybrids in the country, and the drake looks exactly like the one in this thread. Go take a look.

I'd really like to see his pair and how they compare to my mount. Glad I was able to get an Educated Opinion finally!!

40 years of taxidermy experience.

Haha the bill doesn't have to blue for it to be a hybrid

Smalls 04-14-2014 10:56 AM

Man I don't know how any of y'all can tell the color of that bill in the first pic on this thread. How does anyone know what color it was except the OP?

I too would trust Dr. Rowher's word. The man has studied waterfowl for many years, and definitely knows his stuff.

tim3516 04-14-2014 11:45 AM

It's a beautiful bird! You're a lucky man

"W" 04-14-2014 12:03 PM

How come you just don't put the mount next to another one to show how big it is?? Or is this your only duck mount?

Too me that would shut up the haters

Here is the bird next to a pintail pair and my other Hybrid.. Those birds were very large so it's tough to really see how big the GWT/Pintail is my comparison.. To me, it would only show how large the duck is by putting it next to another GWT or even a BWT but I don't know anyone who has one mounted.. Attachment 66167

And to be honest I really don't feel like I need to prove anything to the haters.. If they want to look past an expert opinion, that's there problem...
