speed is good for long runs in the ship channel. Yamaha f150 is good motor, but I think you might be wishing for more power once settled into it.

without a doubt, a 200 or 225 will get you a lot better cruise speed not to mention top end. Plus it doesn't have to work as hard as a 150 which will improve mileage. A pad boat like that will not perform right without enough horsepower to lift the nose up.

in some of the pictures i saw some plastic lids and plastic cleats, not sure why they wouldn't just use glass lids and stainless.

one thing about the speckle paint finish inside is that it's much easier to keep looking clean

If you are looking at getting a Yamaha go on their web site and look at the test data they have done on boats. Maybe yours was not tested but I am sure you can find one that is pretty close to the weight and hull design of the one you are looking at(Haynie). Hard to believe that boat has a weight of 1,350# and rated for a 250hp. The test results/data that Yamaha did with the 4 stroke 150/Xpress X22Bay are pretty dang accurate compared to the way mine runs....fuel ecomony, top speed, speed @ rpms, and plane time. If anything the test data is conservative based on the load weight during the test. I usually have more weight in my boat since I fish three 90% of the time. Also, a 4 stoke can run at higher RPMS than a 2 stroke DI motor. I bet the Optimax has the same range as the HPDI...5,500 rpms compared to a 4 stoke at 6,000 RPMS. I bet that boat would fly with a 225 Optimax!
I think the 150 Yamaha 4 stoke is more than enough motor for that boat...get a jack plate.

Allways get what the boat is rated for. The boat performs the best with that rating. It dont mean you have to run it in the corner all the time but if you need it you got it. Under rating a boat is hard work on the motor most of the time. Not talking about all boats but hulls 19' and up.

Nothing wrong with putting the MAX H.P...but do you really need it... One question 80-90% of 24' bay boat are rated for a 300H.P. motor....how many do you see with a 300H.P. on the back (10%-20%)?????? Most have 225H.P. or 250H.P. To me if the motor can run at least 50mph and get out of the hole quick with a load then good enough for me...but to each his own. I my case I went with a 150 4 stroke over a 200 HPDI....the HPDI was 6 mph faster...but running at 40mph the gas mileage was basically the same....and I wanted a 4 stroke.

I only know 4 that are rated for 300 and they all have 300. Iknow some that are rated for 275 and only have 250 nad they are optimas

Look at these 24' bay boats manufacutres on their web site I bet you they have a 300H.P. max rating: Triton LTS, Natuic Star, Blazer Bay, Sea Pro, Ranger, Champion, Scout, Skeeter, Shearwater, Blue Wave, Hydra-Sports and so on....most 24' bay boat companies rate them for a 300H.P....OK so if they are rated for a 250 and the have a 225 then are the under powered??? I would be you that most have a 225 or 250HP on their boat. I bet you $100 if you look at 10 24' bay boat rated for a 300HP 7-8 have a 225 or 250HP on the back. Heck I know 3 guides out of Dularge that have 24' blazer bay boat (rated for a 300) and they have 225 or 250 on the back. Again, nothing wrong with going with the max H.P. but I would give up HP to get the motor I wanted as long as the boat still ran @ 50 and got out of the hole quick with a load.

well you are correct to some degree but horsepower ratings on most of them are from 200-300 and 250-300 so testing complies with that.

Well if a 24' has a HP range of 100HP then why don't a 22' boat have that range. It is all a marketing thing. Most boat makers do not want to price themselves out. Most can still afford a 22' with a 200 or 225 with Max HP. Think about it.

bottom line is that this boat with a light fishing load should do close to 50 with a 150, it would do north of 60 with a 2 1/4 propped right

My Xpress X22 Bay boat which has a dry weight of 1,700# compared to this boat of 1,350# does right at 50mph....48/49 @ 5,900rpms (I have a 6" jack plate) with 3 men in the boat, 44 gallons of fuel plus a 152qt ice chest, fishing tackle, three batteries plus the other crap you carry....This boat with a 150 should easliy do 50mph loaded. I know this I would rather have a little less speed and have a 4 stroke Yamaha 150 then a Merc Optimax 200/225. Also, how many times are you able to run a bay boat at 60 plus MPH....this is not bass fishing...

just get a yellow fin 24 bay..slap that new 350 yammy on the back...be done with it..
