Taxidermist confirmed it was a black bellied whisling duck/hippo/merganser hybrid

tboy 09-05-2014 04:22 PM

Only thing missing was the tote full of Heinekens, I mean, umm, survival supplies.

Yep. He's been in the business for 40 years. Pretty much a waterfowl biologist.

cajunforeman 09-05-2014 09:12 PM

Sorry top dawg, until spunt drag confirms the hybrid we can't take your taxidermist word.

Spunt Drag 09-05-2014 09:27 PM

Definitely a Katrina Teal/Old Squaw mix.

Getting all the gear out of the hunting closet. Need new waders, maybe another haydel 85, I tear up the reeds in a year but I still like the way they call. More shells. Looks like I'll be in Lafayette Shooters Wens night! Where's DuckGoGetter and Micah? Doesn't seem like Nov without them on this thread.

I might have a bunch of reeds for that call. If I do i can throw you some. Don't throw the call away, give it to me I'll make it like new if I got all the parts which I think I do. Gonna go check now

We're around here every once in a while. We put a new blind down in GC a few days ago, still have some brushing to do and some add-ons but it has turned out great.

bgizzle 11-05-2014 04:18 PM

Startin' to get nervous and sleepless! Making a run Wens night to stock up on camp supplies for the weekend. I've hunted ducks for over 45 years and I still act like a kid right before the opener! Also a stop by Little Verons for 1/2gallon of crown (medicinal purposes only!) and a few bottles of vino for the meals. Hoping its a good one and a safe one for everybody. Head shots only!

Doesn't look like I'll make it down till maybe sunday, pouring the slab for the house saturday morning. I'll be looking for you when I pass that way.

Reefman 11-11-2014 05:42 PM

Hey T...you guys are covered up tic tic! Hope to see you down there. You can't postpone that slab till Monday? Heck, you can shot a limit or two in 10 minutes and be back in time!

Waited a little late to do it, but I usually touch up all my dekes that need it with paint yearly. Instead, this year I've bought all the stuff to flock with. I've only got about a dozen pin drake heads done so far, but that only took about 15 minutes by myself. Only got about 50 more heads to go then I'll flock all the black on the drakes, then touch up the white and everything else with paint. Pic doesn't rlly do any justice, they look great in direct sunlight though. Will do all my greenheads also after the pins.

C-bass those looks great what kind of paint are you using?? I never do much retouching.

C-Bass2mouth 10-23-2015 04:41 PM

Haven't painted anything on those few yet, just flocked the heads. But it's just rustoleum enamel that acts as the adhesive for the flock. I think that color was leather brown. If you wanted to do a green head then just get the matching enamel color to your flocking. Does it help? Eh, idk. Probably doesn't hurt though.

It's November! Went to the GC marsh...coulda used my bay boat to get around, water everywhere! Did see a few flights around the area though. I'm sure we'll get a few shots opening weekend. Looking forward to a weekend at the camp with our sons along with cookin', having a cocktail or two and watching a great football game. Dead ducks and go Tigers!

meaux fishing 11-02-2015 07:33 PM

Heading to the marsh tomorrow to finish brushing a blind. Will post what we see. West of PI.

Also anybody around the PI area come check out the DU banquet at the old school Friday night. Will be serving a steak dinner. Doors open at 6. Great way to kick off the season. I can set you up with tickets or a table

Quackhead62 11-02-2015 08:43 PM

Was in the marsh yesterday pulling a go devil up that got sunk. We still have water everywhere and it's really high. Hopefully the few days of north winds this week will push the water down. But did see some nice flocks of birds.

We have a surplus of 3 things on the lease: Water, Coots and Squealers
I can live with the Coots and Squealers.

I'm not setting my hopes real high for Saturday; our weather is much different than last year.
I remember driving home after the opening day hunt on Saturday and seeing all the ducks in the Burns; it was unreal.

Mallards were everywhere right off the side of the road; I've never seen em like that before.

Either way, I'm pumped ready to go and just be out in the marsh.

My son Hunter was deer hunting at the Delta 2 weeks ago and on the way home threw a rod on the engine of my Prodrive. It's in the shop now and with 160 hours Briggs is refusing to honor my warranty. I used Mobil 1 synthetic oil in the engine and they are saying it was inappropriate oil!? Heck of a thing to happen this close to the season. Now I get to buy a new engine for it. I hope the shop can get it installed this week before I get home. Talk about piss you off. I can't imagine that Mobil 1 oil would cause this engine to do that. When the shop checked the oil level it was fine prior to disassembley. Makes you think ***.

C-Bass2mouth 11-03-2015 07:46 AM

Went to Holly Beach Sunday to patch a hole in the boat and brush, highest water I've seen since we've had the place. Didn't get there until around noon but saw a good bit of gads flying around, one big flock of redheads, and zero teal. Looks like the spoons won't be so lucky this opener..

I haven't had that conversation yet. I've been thinking it over and I am certainly going to dispute this decision by them. I've reviewed the manual and warranty and no where in either does it advise against using synthetic oil. Reading on the internet tells me that a oil high in Zinc would be best for an air cooled engine. Makes me mad that they don't tell you this stuff when you buy an engine.
