Salt ditch/ black lake

Where is the salt ditch located? And what is the easiest way to get to black lake?

cduhon 03-26-2013 09:31 PM

Depends on where you coming from. Easiest is to launch at Ellender bridge and head west couple miles, will be first canal on your left. The high lines run parallel with it. Proceed down salt ditch couple miles and black lake will be on your right. Be careful though, Black lake is shallow with lots of old pipes, docks, and unmarked hazards. Many of boats ruined back there.

Is the marsh on the east side of the ditch private?

Don't know but most of it is only 6" deep.

jdunbar 03-27-2013 05:17 PM

very careful where you go back there, ruined a lower unit in there. One wrong turn and your beached.

You can poll it and crush reds on the east side. Better have shallow draft.

newhitaker 03-27-2013 06:50 PM

wading is best back there

Pipes run parallel to the ditch on most of the east side, just at the mudline...

Are you just sayin that to save your hole?
Just kidding, but how do you find out if marsh is private other than getting caught?

As stated earlier, 90% of east side is 12" or less. Seen many boats try only to be towed off, that is if you can make it across pipeline which is just under the surface that runs parallel with salt ditch. Only couple deeper canals on east side and they lead to private marsh, lots of it leased to hunting clubs. Go out there on north wind and all you see is oysters.

My buddy found one of those pipes with his lower unit, but we also found hungry reds and flounder.

Red bite is good when the water is moving out of the marsh. Reds like to stay in the ditch on outgoing tide. When its good its good but when the water is bad and tide not moving it is bad.

If it is in Cameron Parish you can assume it is private.
