went yesterday made it to the water around 2. went and checked out cocahoes (very nice place) met W again. He tried to help me by telling me where to go i just suck.....anyway started on the east bank struck out, waited on shower to finish on west bank headed over there, notta this was working on my patience. bait fish everywhere, specks jumping out the water. i through my whole tackle box not one bite. so i went to west cove. first spot nothing second spot birds everywhere picked these up on those. the fish and birds where all over in west cove. i left early so i could make it back before dark. if i knew what i was doing i probly could have caught alot more. i guess im gonna have to pay a guide to show me how to fish.

Sorry yesterday was the 18th

mcjaredsandwich 05-19-2010 09:56 AM

fat specks, nice catch!

Gerald 05-19-2010 09:58 AM

Usually finding the fish, is the hard part.

IMO......what bait you use in not as important as how you work the bait.

The key to catching fish is mostly in the bait presentation. Figure out how the fish [trout] want "you" to work the bait......fast, slow, on the bottom, up near the surface, etc. is the key to catching fish.

This is why 2 fishermen can use the same bait and one person may catch a lot more fish than the other person.

Ray 05-19-2010 09:59 AM

That looks like one nice sized speck.

adamsfence 05-19-2010 10:09 AM

gerald you or ray just need to come with me and show me we can take my boat my gas.......

Gerald 05-19-2010 10:12 AM

I might have taken you up on the offer yesterday, but did not see the post until evening.

I will help pay for gas.

specktator 05-19-2010 10:28 AM

everytime i have worked a set of birds the fish always like a slow presentation when throwing a jig head. also a popping cork works very well for the birds and when u see the fish close to the surface. i just dont like using them. my buddies use them all the time though and out-catch me sometimes! and if this happens i will just start working my bait faster.

LaAngler 05-19-2010 10:36 AM

Me too Adam.. I've been fishing for a couple years now and it's all trial and error with alot of error.... O yea and I pick JW's brain alot too

blackmamba 05-19-2010 12:54 PM

My biggest problem tho is learning where to start looking for fish on any given day. Anybody have any useful tips on that please post up.... This would probably be a good thread in itself?

Jordan 05-19-2010 12:58 PM

i normally start before daylight in turners bay.. working the island or any reef with topwater.... nothing like hearing that "POP" before daylight

Montauk17 05-19-2010 01:25 PM

Working a bomber jerkbait on top is good too. Its alot easier than walking the dog on a topwater.

Start with the wind. Whatever way the wind is blowing, the cleanest water will most prob be in the area most protected by that wind. SE wind would mean that u would wanna work the east side all the way to the South. That's more than likely where the cleanest water will be. Then just walk that dog! Lol I'm definitely nothing close to an expert but that's what works for me. Just be patient and try one area for as long as u can stand, walking that dog(I prefer a Super Spook, very easy to walk), and scanning the surface for bait, fishing hitting, birds, etc. If the fish are there and u are walking it right, u will get at least a few strikes on top.

specktator 05-19-2010 04:26 PM

Topwater works well for locating the fish.

Country Boy 05-19-2010 04:36 PM

I find I get more "hook-ups" if I wait 1 or 2 seconds after seeing the blowup, to set the hook......or just tighten up the slack to see if the fish is hooked, before setting the hook. Doing this keeps the bait "in the same spot" so the fish can strike the bait again.

If the fish misses the topwater bait......let the bait sit for a couple of seconds and then give it 1 or 2 little "twitches" and that will often get the fish to strike it again.

Salty 05-19-2010 06:52 PM

Never "set" the hook when fishin' topwater baits.........."Reel 'til ya feel".

Fishing birds you want to rip it....only work the bait about 4 to 5 pops that's it...rest is waist...reel up throw again....trout are chasing bait so make your bait look hurt.....

I had a bad day that day too bro. only 4 keepers.

jchief 05-19-2010 09:02 PM

Anyone looking for a partner on an afternoon trip in the Hackberry area, call me. Depending on the day, I may be able to leave work around 3:00. I live in Carlyss. If you live a ways from the lake, we can go in my rig. 337822128. Dang wind is starting to lay some and more conducive to me fishing.
