Making the switch

I think im going to make the switch to braid.

Whats the best braided line out there ?? Power Pro?? Spiderwire ?? Rip Cord??

Im thinking some power pro..... Going to TX this weekend coming up to do a little private pond fishing. They got some monsters in there. Last time I fished, I kept breaking off in the lily pads. Think I might make the switch to Power Pro and set my drag a little light. Ain't nothing like seeing a big 6+lb bass blow up on a frog or a buzzbait in the pads. Im pumped !!!!

Which would ya'll prefer ???

Montauk17 06-02-2010 04:25 PM

Power pro!! I will tell you one thing though,be patient and let the line break in to wear off the wax coating. Once the coating wears off its awesome.

Jordan 06-02-2010 04:26 PM

how long does it take for the coating to get off ??? I dont wanna spend $15 a roll and hate it after 5 casts. Im patient enough..... I love mono line, just wanna try and see if I like power pro

southern151 06-02-2010 04:31 PM

I've got one of my spinners with Power Pro. It took a little adjusting but, it's great once you get used to it!

all star rod 06-02-2010 06:43 PM

Recently made the switch myself. I am using 30# Power Pro which is equal to 8# diameter mono now on my 3 Curados and my Chronarch. The Power Pro is great.

Sea-Trac Offshore 06-02-2010 07:52 PM

All I use is p pro. Where I usually fish deep in the marsh its the only stuff that holds up to the abrasiveness. I am usually in 2' of water or less with oysters and branches and it holds its own.

Sea-Trac Offshore 06-02-2010 07:53 PM

Forgot to mention. In clean water p pro can be seen by trout easily. I tip it with about 6' of flouro when fishing trout.

Mediumheavyaction6'6 06-02-2010 07:57 PM

made the switch a few months back and love the stuff. I ran out a few weeks ago and tied on some mono I had left over. I will never go back to mono again. After using braid the mono feels like you are setting the hook with a rubber band. Man, that stuff has some stretch.

longsidelandry 06-02-2010 08:19 PM

All I use is 30# PowerPro and do the same as stated above when fishing for trout, tip with some flouro.

Jordan 06-02-2010 08:21 PM

Thanks for the info guys. I'm convinced !

"W" 06-02-2010 08:25 PM

Jordan one back lash your done!!! Don't do it!!

Jordan 06-02-2010 08:27 PM

I've backlashed pp before and got it out. You just suck at casting ! :thefinger:

adamsfence 06-02-2010 08:28 PM

yeah them knots are bad on some braid....have to agree with w on that one

Jordan 06-02-2010 08:31 PM

I got 5 combo's. Might convert 2 to braid and 3 mono

duckman444 06-02-2010 08:31 PM

damn those some big words mr. pond fisher hahahahaa

eman 06-02-2010 08:35 PM

power pro

been using 30lb pp for a few years.
yes trout can see it .had it proven to me doing the drift in ameda. 2 things you need to carry w/ you when fishing PP, a 8" piece of broom handle and a ball point pen.
The broom handle is for when you get snagged . Wrap a few turns around the broom handle and use it to pull with . DO NOT!!! use your rod and reel to try to pull loose.
the ball point pen is for getting back lash or wind knots out of your line.
Also ,You may need to loosen your drag as there is 0 stretch in the PP and you can rip the hook out on the hookset.

huntin fool 06-02-2010 08:35 PM

about to make the switch my self....Mono aint cuttin it with all the tree tops and laydwons

tcglsu 06-02-2010 08:46 PM

I made the switch about 2 years ago it didn't take me but bout 2 fishing trips to go back to mono

Be sure not to bust a rod into pieces with these monsters....We remember what happened last time you went pond fishing....:p

Jordan for some reason your name Jordan and Monster fish just don't sound right?? R you bringing that snoopy pole?

Dink 06-02-2010 10:32 PM

I use samarai braid.....its smaller than pp and doesn't have all that wax, also, its much smoother so it doesn't cut into your eyes and reel......its more expensive, but only buy 1 roll every few years.....other good thing about it is it doesn't Fray like pp........good luck Jordan, buy a roll of each and try it out. ......

fishinpox 06-02-2010 10:46 PM

20lb pp, spoo up with some mono backing to take up spool space, then put 2-3 fiths braid with a fluro leader .

I always wanted to try the Samurai braid by Diawa, I got to save up some money before I buy a 500 yd spool of that though lol

LaAngler 06-03-2010 12:21 AM

heard suffix is good

bluewing 06-03-2010 01:06 AM

if you do get snagged, just rap the line a few times around the butt of your rod.

Almost agree, made the switch to braid 4 years ago, fished 30# pp until last year, now I am 100% suffix. PP and Suffix are about the same, just prefer suffix over pro don't know why. Make sure you put a fluro leader. Doesn't matter as much when fishing muddy waters like Big Lake, but will make a huge difference when fishing clear ponds for bass.

Can't beat braid, you can feel every little bite on the line. If you ever try to go back to mono it will feel like you are fishing with a rubberband. Another plus, I fish marshes for bass all the time, braid cuts through lillies like a knife, can't beat it man.

thats what I wanted to hear... I heave heard from several different people that if your spool has holes in it (which all of mine do) to not even worry about putting 2-5 yards of mono to seat the PP or braided line. Im going to get some PP tonight and just put it in one of the holes and fill up the spool..... I'll be leaving bright and early tomorrow morning to make an afternoon/evening bass trip... i'll take plenty of pics and post them up on Tuesday when I return (due to not having a computer and i cant upload pics form my BB)

Why would you want to cut into the cork or foam on the but of your rod?

Jordan 06-03-2010 06:09 PM

I'll bring a stick with me. Just in case.

the reason i put 1/3 or 1/2 a spool of mkono on first is because the braid is expensive and you very rarely get it down to the backing so i basiclly just fill up the spool with garbage mono then put a top shot of braid. tie a uni-uni knot for the braid to mono connection. even i dirty water i use a leader cept when targeting reds

B-Stealth 06-03-2010 08:42 PM

Dont spool a 200 curado without backing, it will take a 150yrd spool of 20lb pp in a heartbeat.

whunter29 06-03-2010 08:46 PM

Jordan there aint nothing like walking the dog on power pro. Tie on a chug bug or zara spook and back the drag off and look out especially in a private pond.

all star rod 06-03-2010 08:54 PM

I can spool 2 Curados with a 150 yard spool of 30# Power Pro (75 yards each). I string my reels like Pox does.

Jordan 06-03-2010 09:07 PM

I'll google a uni-uni knot. Idk how to tie anything but a clinch knot

mcjaredsandwich 06-03-2010 09:14 PM

I have p pro on all my reels but one. On the other i have some 20# copolymer line my dad gave me. Love the braid though. you can pretty much straighten the hook if you get hung up before your line breaks.

B-Stealth 06-03-2010 09:35 PM

The uni knot is the only one you need to know. IMO

Jordan 06-03-2010 09:39 PM

If I seen it being tied, I'd probably know it. I've tied several different knots, but don't know/remember the names of them
