Almost had my boat for sale!

Walked in the house from work, my wife says my boat stinks I need to clean it. I told her I cleaned it this weekend after fishing. I went outside, took the cover off and the smell hit me. I climbed in opened the fish box and saw a trout at the very back of the fish box I accidentally left. Maggats everywhere, I started gagging and thought of selling it as is. 2 Gallons of bleach and 1 hour scrubbing later I think the smell is gone.

FF_T_Warren 06-08-2010 09:25 PM

eek, we forgot bait in ours one time and it was nasty smelling, but no maggots so not quite as bad

LPfishnTIM 06-08-2010 09:27 PM

I cleaned some fish this weekend and put the head and guts in my ice chest, which I was going to dump, but forgot til yesterday when my ice chest fell over in the back of my truck I was gagging after I hopped out and smelled what had been brewing in the heat!

specktator 06-08-2010 09:50 PM

had a trash bag full of trout heads this past monday. trash is supposed to pass on tuesday so i threw them in the trash can and put it at the street. usually, i will go dump them but since i knew the trash men were passing the next morning i threw them in there. well they didnt show up till wed afternoon. My garbage can was full of maggots. it was horrible. I cleaned the can out gagging the whole time and it still smells turrible!

youmyboyblue 06-08-2010 09:56 PM

I just went outside and can still smell it. I dumped more bleach and leaving the top open for the night. I have been considering using the fish box for storage and just using an ice chest well this just made up my mind. Will buy an ice chest before this weekend and strap in under my seat. Screw this. If the smell is there in the morning the boat is for sale!

FF_T_Warren 06-08-2010 10:01 PM

what kinda boat ya got? (besides a stinky one) I'll buy a stinky boat as long as it looks and runs good

jchief 06-08-2010 10:03 PM

The smell will go away after a while. Know from experience. Unfortuantely

Once I found a small ice chest in a ditch. I stopped and it was in good condition.....execpt a bad smell. I cleaned it up, but still had an odor.

I weighted it down in big bucket and soaked it in clorax and checked it every week or so. Smell never went away so I threw it a way a couple of months later.

Jordan 06-08-2010 10:26 PM

Bet you'll always check that fish box more times than once huh? That's a nasty smell. It'll be burned into your brain forever

LA-BOY 06-08-2010 10:31 PM

I, and a buddy of mine thought his dad had cleaned a few bass and goggle eye we had caught at henderson back in high school. as we got the boat ready for the next trip to calcasieu river I asked him about the fish, he said I'm sure my dad cleaned them, WRONG,FLIPIN OMG, I swear I saw fumes come out of the ice chest, the goggle eye were now 1lb and the bass were 3lb's.

We had a power outage at our little campground in Leeville. We returned after not being there for a couple of weeks and OMG. I will never keep bait shrimp in the freezer again. One guy in the campground duct taped his fridge closed and put it out to the road. Being that I didn't have that kinda money, I had to clean mine out.:puke:

OdoBan. It works pretty well. I forget the heads and guts in icechest all the time. leaves a fresh kind of smell though. All my icechest smell like this. Not the most manly smell but way better than rotten fish.My wife keeps a bottle in the garage in case i spill the water from the icechest anywhere near the driveway.

Ok out of everything posted here, I would try this. If this guy hasn't learned his lesson and leaves heads in the box regularly, this stuff must really work.

Feesherman 06-09-2010 08:13 AM

Some coffee grounds will work too. Fresh ones though, not some that you already made coffee with.

flyphisher 06-09-2010 08:29 AM

I've had this happen a few times with ice chests with bait or fish left in them. Get you a bottle of Mr Clean, fill the fish box with water, and pour in the bottle of Mr Clean. Works 100x's better than bleach. Let it sit for a few hours, drain and rinse.

How can you forget "all the time"? I promise you this is not happinin to me again.
I think the smell is gone. Went outside this morning and sniffed around the entire boat for a few minutes (looked like a rutting buck) and didn't smell it. Told the wife I needed to go run it to make sure the smell doesn;t come back. Going fishing.:D

Try dumping a bag of fresh coffee grounds in it and leave it a day or so. Truckers use that method to get the smell of chicken blood out of their reefers after a haul.

I usually clean fish on Friday or Saturday afternoon. I have no place to dump the crap that is left over so I put them back in the icechest and dump ice on it till Tuesday morning when trash truck comes. Well if I end up drinking a little to much on Saturday night:spineyes: I end up sleeping in on Sunday and putting ice on the fish is usually last thing I think about. I don't try to ,but it happens all to often.

Cody, Arm and Hammer Baking soda. Get a big box and sprinkle the whole thing in there, then close it up. I learned this after Katrina when dealing with the nastiness in the fridges and freezers. Only last week, someone left some formerly live scrimps in an ice chest at my camp. I didn't have a lot of room in the boat and I had emptied the chest earlier that day, so I just stowed it in the camp. It's been darn hot lately. The smell hit me when I opened the door. I busted out the baking soda. This was Monday. I was out there until today. I opened the box before I left and there was only the faintest odor. It'll be gone by Saturday when I get back.

Someone mentioned charcoal. It will do great, but get lump charcoal, not the briquettes. For heaven's sake, not the kind with lighter fluid in it. Put it in a towel and bash it up with a hammer. This exposes more surface area and allows the charcoal to do its work.

Ray 06-11-2010 01:34 AM

I dump fish guts/heads in the water all the time. Never heard about any laws against it. All the old coonasses I know do it too.
Just don't do it next to someone's house or camp.
I have frozen leftovers till trash day, but never fish guts. I try to clean them somewhere else when possible.
