killing garfish

after catching garfish what is the best way to kill them? with a bat or shooting them? and is it legal to shoot them? or any other ways thx in advance

weedeater 04-06-2011 11:07 PM

you can buy those mini baseball bats, a club, or beat the crap out of them on the boat

LPfishnTIM 04-06-2011 11:14 PM

hammer to da head!

Wide Open 04-07-2011 06:58 AM

Hatchet to the back of the head is most effective other than a bullet! Don't miss with the hatchet!

wtretrievers 04-07-2011 07:06 AM

It's illegal to shoot them....bat to da head!

Hmmmm
Everyone i see catching them big alligator gar on jugs shoots them before pulling them into the boat.???

Finfeatherfur 04-07-2011 08:36 AM

Didn't know it was illegal to shoot them. I have only handled a handful of big gars in my life, and have always had them expire from lead poisoning prior to getting them in the boat. I may have to argue this one w/ the nice guys in green if I am ever in that position again. I'll kill a pig with a knife all day long as long as our catch dog is on his ear, but I will not put a 5' gar in the boat without a hole in his head......that's just me!

Garfish 04-07-2011 08:42 AM

:help:OH SHIDIZZLE!!!!!!! I swear I didn't do it!! LOL

I never heard of that either, where does it say it is illegal?

Bson 04-07-2011 08:58 AM

A hammer or hatchet to the head works best. If you shoot them, eventually you are going to shoot end up shooting through the line and losing a good fish. Maybe I'm the only one with that kind of luck though

I keep them alive in the bottom of the boat, just cover them with wet grass sacks.
If you kill them right away, you will need to put them on ice if you don't clean them too soon, or they will spoil.
They live for a long time out of water and won't spoil while alive.

How do you keep them from tearing up the boat Ray? I mean some of the ones we caught were as big around as my waist, and lately - I'm pretty thick! LMAO!

I watched 2 guys w/ 25 -5 gallon jug lines down in doe gris spend sat and sun fishing a pit . they had it down to a science. they got there put the boat in the water baited an set their jugs and went back an built a cleaning table out of 3 10' x 12" scaffold boards and 3 saw horses. got out ther stuff to clean the gar and as soon as a jug would pop up they'ld get in the boat go get the gar shoot it bring it back to the table and clean it . meat went straight to ice chest. They slept in the truck sat night.
ran the jugs all da sat and all day sunday and when they got ready to pack it up . i asked one of them how much meat he figured they had?
he told me between 500 and 700 lbs. It was a bunch of 120 qt ice chest full so i don't know. but he did tell me they got $1 a lb. for it.
you could tell it wasn't their first time doing this . they cleaned those gar as fast as alot of folks can clean redfish.

I fish them in an aluminum boat. Just throw a wet grass sack over them and they don't move much.

When I clean them, I put them on a 2 X 12 with a nail in it, sticking up a coupe inches.
Lay the fish on the board with the nail in it's *** to hold it from sliding. Wipe all slime off and rinse.
Take a sharp hatchet or machette, grab the top rear fin with a pair of pliers and chop forward till you remove a strip off the top, all the way to the head.
Then take a knife and skin it from top to bottom.
Fillet the meat from the bone and put in an ice chest of ice water with a cup of vinigar in it, for a couple hours.
I don't know why, but old folks always told me to never touch the eggs, they are poisonous.

Lol,I know ! catching one 6' long is a fight on trout tackle.
They were camped out in the front of the snake.

homerun 04-07-2011 12:52 PM

.22 pistol or rilfe good enough . opinion?????

eman 04-07-2011 01:33 PM

watch swamp people, they use rifle if at all possible . no use getting hand that close to gator or gars teeth.

Gottogo49 04-07-2011 02:38 PM

I fished with a buddy who used to catch some giants back in the refuge canals. He used a long handle ball peen hammer (no guns allowed in there). He would hit them hard a little lower than between the eyes- scrambled their brains. He had a big one that was only stunned come back alive in the boat, broke a rod and almost knocked him out of the boat before he could administer a second treatment. Gar fishing can be as exciting as gator hunting.

And thats how we do it..

Marshrat 04-07-2011 08:42 PM

It is illegal to shoot gar with a gun and the supposed reason is that people would shoot them and just leave them to waste. Don't know if the reasoning is true but that is what I was always told. My uncle and I both shoot them with a .22 pistol when we fish gar lines. I don't think you will have any trouble as long as you have it on a line if you were to get checked.

It's in the regs under "Methods"

Ray 04-08-2011 08:50 AM

In the spring, when they are spawning and you have a big rain, you can walk around the edges of ponds and see several in a group. You just see the fins sticking out the water.
Walk up to them from the side with a 3/4" X 8' galvanized pipe with a union on one end.
Smack the biggest one on the head with the union end of the pipe.
She will shoot straight ahead like a torpedo for 20' or so and die. Throw her in a pirogue and find the next group. They are easy pickins at that time of year.

Under methods of take I see where you cannot use a gun. But, I thought the take part was the hook and line, not the killing of the fish. I think it's a grey area. But I will still cap em.
