tip for fishing topwater

When fish are blowing up on your Spook but not eatin' it....rig another rod with a Bomber Long "A" (made by the same people) and work it 3-4" beneath the surface. Hold your rod tip at "11:00" and work it in short, eratic jerks. It's not a guaranteed plan but I've seen it work alot more times than not. Three of my biggest trout were caught on these baits. Try it...whatcha got to lose? You might be surprised.

This is an unsolicited testimonial.

will do, thanks

mcjaredsandwich 06-05-2011 10:23 PM

Never thought of this. Will have to give it a try on the days where they just slap at the bait. Thing's got enough hooks to snag em :p

Garfish 06-05-2011 10:24 PM

That kinda plan will work cause I've been using top Pups in the surf and gettin short strikes and then I tie on a 51 MR Mirrorlure and I start hookin up. I'll have to try that jerk bait; gotta Long A in chrome/blue back.

......still waiting on my tx chicken bomber........

Micah 06-05-2011 10:32 PM

I do the same thing in freshwater too, but with a fluke that is roughly the same color as the topwater.

SaltyShaw 06-05-2011 10:34 PM

Crazy Croaker will get the job done also :)
Thanks for the tip ol Salty

You can remove the center hook. A fish will grab this bait head first, so, the front treble will do most of the damage. The rear one comes in handy when they follow it to the boat and take a shot right before you pick it up. I change the hooks to Gamakatsu EWG #4. If they get anywhere near it...it'll git 'em.

hadabite 06-05-2011 10:42 PM

I always have a follow-up bait tied on for that reason. Usually a X-Rap

eman 06-05-2011 10:56 PM

Garfish ,
i have used em at the 13 rock pile and at the heater rig .They work!!!
Used the blue back.

Salty 06-05-2011 11:21 PM

I thought about taking the back hook off a Spook and hookin' up a Bomber about a foot behind. Not sure the Bomber would have any action with the side-to-side motion from the Spook.

I've never seen this color in stores.

booyagasha 06-06-2011 05:37 AM

So cork or no cork...any other tips for rigging

LPfishnTIM 06-06-2011 06:16 AM

I often change the back treble to a size bigger skirted treble and usually that adds enough weight to let the back sink a little in the water. changes the action a little.

Hopefully next week (if the conditions hold) I'll be able to do some experimenting with em in the surf down in Galveston or Surfside. They been tearing a new one into the trout down there the past 5 days with the wind being 5-10. It's ice cream conditions again today, but I gots other things to do unfortunately.....

evidrine 06-06-2011 09:03 AM

Nice! Thanks for the tip!

Larger hooks kill a Bomber. I've tried all that. I have a test tank at home...remember?

evidrine 06-06-2011 10:25 AM

What is that color called?

Slidellkid 06-06-2011 10:28 AM

Good tip

Super Spook 06-06-2011 10:52 AM

Salty special.

It's called silver prism/black back. They also make 'em with a blue back. I repainted some with a chartreuse back and belly and left the prism on the sides. Pink back and yellow belly is my fav. That's 2/3 of a Texas Chicken.

I never cared for throwin' topwaters because of the aggravation of them not eatin' it at times. The dudes that fished with me loved it, tho. That's how I started catchin' them topwater fish with a Bomber. I'd throw right behind a blowup, twitch it a time or two, and, WHAM! It's just as much fun as on top.

You told me to try it a while back, and yes it does work. Had a few hit it on top after letting it float back to the surface. Also caught a huge sheepshead on it,ask meaux I was in his boat.

We have fished the original corky's under a spook tyed on with 40lb fluro. Removed back hook and tyed to the back of the last o-ring. Moderate success, just neutralizes some of that action a spook gives, but it did work on several fish.

Broke off a few times and moved up to 80lb and it held better and did not get tangled as bad also.

evis102 06-06-2011 06:48 PM

I soak my topwater baits in gulp juice.

I caught a blackie but never a goathead. Every flounder I ever caught (4 ) was on a Bomber.
