When to move

Just curious on how long every one gives a spot before moving on to a new area......I'm too impatient I don't give areas very long before I'm ready to boat ride. End up spending more time riding than fishing

longcast 07-20-2011 07:13 PM

I end up staying at a spot to damn long. I need to learn to pick up and move when the bite dies.

"W" 07-20-2011 07:13 PM

If I know the fish are their..I don't move until the tide is right and they aint biting...

I'm in your boat Longcast I'll stay in one area until it's time to start drinking and hit the landing! That's prolly why I don't catch many fish now. In my younger days start drinking before the boat was in the water and didn't stop till all the fish were cleaned!!!
That may be the problem now??? Can't catch fish to save my azz lol

We gotta go fishing u go one way I'll go the other- should be able to snag some????

"W" 07-20-2011 08:12 PM

And it is also hard call to make if your not on fish all the time ....like last week...me and reed did not find our bite to about 8am...we smoke em...then Fri I knew where to go......got there and nothing...but waited 2 hours with 3 trout and tide turned and every cast on top water...so you have to know the area your fishing and if the want incoming or out going tide...last hitch off...outgoing was were it was at....90% of the boats gave up before the falling tide....and when it fell.....all the trout you could catch

The 1st and 2nd time i ever fished lake of the big, was last november/december in the afternoon and the boats coming in had very few trout, we went out and smoked em. Fairly new to saltwater fishing without a guide, but in freshwater sometimes they all of a sudden just turn on, and some of the best trips i have had in the summer is during the middle of the day when everyone has gone home

Solid advice and some of the best knowledge I have gained from fishing with W, Josh L, Chris C, Chris Reed, and others. One of my best trips on the lake was the beginning of this year. We knew where the fish were and only had 4 fish in the boat by 10:00am. Something happened and a switch went off and we ended up throwing back 40+ fish after boating a limit in no time.

Adam we are just gonna follow "w" around for the tourney b/c neither of us can catch fish on big lake....... the blue wave should be able to keep up with that haynie rite???

adamsfence 07-21-2011 07:01 AM

How do you know the fish are there to start with? Trial and error, experience, luck, log, etc? How do you decide what bait to throw?

Rookie Redfish 07-21-2011 09:22 AM

I agree with jcheif.
I just have to luck up on a school of something and start catching.
Not too pickey, but I try for redfish and flounder all the time.
Mostly just get in a nest of croakers and catfish.
Learning to stay off the bottom so much though.

joshdomingue 07-21-2011 09:32 AM

where you originally from rookie???

Rookie Redfish 07-21-2011 10:34 AM

At least your sticking with the eagles and not jumping on the band wagon after the superbowl victory. I seen Ft. Polk figured you were stationed there.

RaginCagin 07-21-2011 12:01 PM

I agree with many about if you know the fish are in the area and the tide is not right just wait it out. If the tide is perfect and i am not catching i dont give it long but i have seen too many times out of cypermort point what the tide moving does. I was tied to a well head 2 years ago and in 2 hours between 3 people we had a black drum. The guy that was with me insisted the fish were around. As soon as the tide started rollin we caught our 75 trout in just over a hour and all were some hogs.
