Default When to move

Just curious on how long every one gives a spot before moving on to a new area......I'm too impatient I don't give areas very long before I'm ready to boat ride. End up spending more time riding than fishing

I end up staying at a spot to damn long. I need to learn to pick up and move when the bite dies.

I'm in your boat Longcast I'll stay in one area until it's time to start drinking and hit the landing! That's prolly why I don't catch many fish now. In my younger days start drinking before the boat was in the water and didn't stop till all the fish were cleaned!!!
That may be the problem now??? Can't catch fish to save my azz lol

And it is also hard call to make if your not on fish all the time ....like last week...me and reed did not find our bite to about 8am...we smoke em...then Fri I knew where to go......got there and nothing...but waited 2 hours with 3 trout and tide turned and every cast on top water...so you have to know the area your fishing and if the want incoming or out going tide...last hitch off...outgoing was were it was at....90% of the boats gave up before the falling tide....and when it fell.....all the trout you could catch

The 1st and 2nd time i ever fished lake of the big, was last november/december in the afternoon and the boats coming in had very few trout, we went out and smoked em. Fairly new to saltwater fishing without a guide, but in freshwater sometimes they all of a sudden just turn on, and some of the best trips i have had in the summer is during the middle of the day when everyone has gone home

Solid advice and some of the best knowledge I have gained from fishing with W, Josh L, Chris C, Chris Reed, and others. One of my best trips on the lake was the beginning of this year. We knew where the fish were and only had 4 fish in the boat by 10:00am. Something happened and a switch went off and we ended up throwing back 40+ fish after boating a limit in no time.

How do you know the fish are there to start with? Trial and error, experience, luck, log, etc? How do you decide what bait to throw?

I agree with jcheif.
I just have to luck up on a school of something and start catching.
Not too pickey, but I try for redfish and flounder all the time.
Mostly just get in a nest of croakers and catfish.
Learning to stay off the bottom so much though.
