Chickens

Anyone raise chickens? I'm thinking about building a coop and was looking for suggestions/pics of coops. It would be nice to have fresh eggs every morning.

Thanks.

meaux fishing 02-22-2012 06:27 PM

We do. Our coop is even mobile. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow

Just don't put your nesting boxes any higher than you can see in them, have had them over head height & reached in & grabbed a snake. Not cool:shaking: They stay eye level now.

I made a motorized chicken plucker follown some on line plans, cleaned 68 chickens in about two hours, they were plucked slicker than a whistle. Check out you tube and look for Whiz bang plucker. Some day I will raise more chickens, I stongly recommend concrete floor and strong material for the side walls to keep the racoons out, racoons like to just kill the chickens.

Steel flashing works good cus a coon can fit a chicken threw 1/1 box wire at ground level.

Could not train mine to sleep away from da wire an would wake to find cheese grated chicken........can't sell dat.

wtretrievers 02-23-2012 08:09 AM

Btw......becareful not to drop your chewing gum inside the coop, I think I tried every piece before I found it:spineyes:

jaclyn.renea 02-23-2012 08:56 AM

When I was little, my papa had a chicken coop. It was made out of chicken wire and 2 x 4s. He even attached a dolly to it so it could be moved. Pretty neat.

Josh C 02-23-2012 10:09 AM

Thanks for the info guys. I would really like to see some pics if anyone has some.

well didnt get home from work till midnight last night but dug these pics up, on the back side i built a door that hinges down the width of the house that allows you to get to the laying boxes to get the eggs. covered the windows on the side with chicken wire and wrapped the bottom of the kennel with chicken wire. We don't have snake or varmit issues where I'm at. I had 2 roosters and 3 hens but the roosters got out one night from me not shutting the gate all the way and they decided to spur me while I was trying to get them at 11 at night after coming home from going out to eat so I left them out over night and the neighbors dog got em.

The tractors are nice for the gardens, fertilize and feed all at once

Hebert 02-24-2012 09:33 PM

So if I have a graden, which I do its about 20'x30' It's 5 rows wide by about 20' long. Can I build a pen around it and put a few chickens in there to keep the bugs out, I thought they would eat the plants.

RatDog, I can always look to you for some wise inspiration......Maybe you should get a ghost writer and write a book!

swamp snorkler 02-25-2012 11:20 AM

How big a pen do I need to keep 6-8 chickens?

Shawn Braquet 02-25-2012 03:37 PM

I think they say 3-4 sq ft per chicken, the chickens will eat your veggies if they can get to em, mine get all the fruit that bugs get to

swamp snorkler 02-25-2012 08:55 PM

I been thinking bout making me a little chicken tractor. The insurance company folks just informed me if I don't get rid of the trampoline I will have to come up with another $1800 a year....... So heres my plan. I will take the jumping part off the trampoline and wrap the frame with chicken wire and put a coop in it........ Thoughts?

Is it the style frame with the wheels on one side? If so it'd be good for around the yard but not the garden obviously. Also they could jump/fly out possibly, also would make for easy prey for hawks if that would be a problem in your area. Remember that roosters aren't needed for eggs, they only fertilize the eggs if you're wanting to hatch some out.

swamp snorkler 02-26-2012 08:40 AM

It doesn't have the wheels but I could put some. I move it whenever i cut the grass without any wheels. I was going to stretch 2 pieces of cable across the top for support and put the wire over the top.

I looked at some chicken coop plans on line and they seem easy enough to build, I may give this a go.

Any suggestions for a good laying breed for the Houma area?

My problem is the neighbors lab

swamp snorkler 02-29-2012 08:24 AM

This is the coop I have in mind. http://catawbacoops.com/ of course I'm not paying the $19.99 they want for the plans. I just drew something up in 15 minutes on Auto-Cad. I'll let yall know how it comes out. I'm thinking I can build it for under $100

coby123 02-29-2012 09:37 AM

dog

that's my problem my lab loves them.Last lab was never bothered by them they used to walk all around him. This one sees only lunch

nguidry 02-29-2012 02:31 PM

My brother raised some a few years ago for a 4h project. Grew like weeds, lazy as heck, and dirty. Had to use a broom to make them walk. 6 weeks later had mini turkeys. Helped clean about 40 and damn near cured my chicken eating for life. Not the cleaning just think about them at the chicken ranch. That has to be a sight. I am telling you they were the laziest animals I have ever seen
