That will last 2yrs....then they'll be no more...and no more oyster jobs for this area....the best thing the commercial fisherman can do is fight for limits for their future....they shut down oyster season early this year due to lack of oysters....

two steps forward and two steps back...

ckinchen 04-27-2012 01:51 PM

So the question is, what can we do as a 5,000+ member website to keep the limits and restrictions that are currently in place?

Sulphite this would be more like 2 steps forward and 10 steps back.

"W" 04-27-2012 01:58 PM

They are going to allow no permit limits next year and its a rape all coming....

Damage is done and what can we do more....

ckinchen 04-27-2012 02:02 PM

I thought it was a bill up for debate not yet passed? If so then there are people we should call and talk to. One being Raymond here on the site as it relates to CCA, they (CCA) pushed the issue for us last time which was very much appreciated.

"W" 04-27-2012 02:03 PM

We cry to fight a 15 trout limit by politics on crap that was of no importance ..but can't stop out of town oyster rapist on from killing our beds....that's the kind of crap we have and system

Who is to blame

mcjaredsandwich 04-27-2012 02:23 PM

Drive some rebar down into the oyster beds...let's see a dredge get torn up.

This one may be hard to kill since Moorish filed the bill and he filed the legislation last year for the change.

It is out of the Senate and in the House, so contact your Representative and see where they stand on it.

drjay 04-27-2012 05:40 PM

I'm not sure if anyone has ever posted this study, but if you want to know the effects of oyster harvesting on our ecosystem, wade through this study. The conclusions of the study may not help us, but if you look at the differences between the south end of the lake compared to the north, it is easy to see how over harvesting will impact recreational fishermen.

I hear everyone cry on here about politics, most know nothing about it from their comments....

But get off your azz and blow there phone up and try to make face to face connections.......the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

jchief 04-27-2012 06:36 PM

Wish I would have known about this. It is easier to get it killed in committee. Maybe can get some amendment tacked on that would make it less palatable to them.

Like CKinchen said........what can 5000+ members do about this......well, we can send more emails and make more phone calls than the oyster lobby.

What we don't need is blow hards and threats! Public support is welcomed but threats get us nowhere. The entire state needs to contact their legislatures and explain the situation and ask them if it was in there backyard would they support a free for all on any public resource. Those of you in Shrevesport,Lafayette,Baton Rouge,Alexandria,Monroe should call your state senators and reps. Let them know you fish Calcasieu Lake and what sen Moorish is trying to do. Support the guy or gal who runs against Moorish next trip with $$$ not your mouth! I would vote against my Dad if he pulled this $hit and tell him so. I will have no other comments about this situation.

"W" 04-27-2012 07:34 PM

We contacted Dan Morrish last year and he push a Half azz permit bill which he reneged on once all the bootleg oyster fisherman went cry and protest on his door step...

So you think us calling our local reps is going to do a damn thing???

Hell no....the bill will push that the oyster fisherman are poor people who need to work and if we limit permits were killing jobs in La...

So if you think a Rep going to kill jobs over fisherman and protecting resources your out your damn mind

Maybe we should of used our Power to stop oystering rape instead of 15 trout limit

tonging would be a start

"W" 04-27-2012 08:49 PM

All I'm going to say on this and I'm done.....

The 15 trout task force are out of favors and let this come back and bite them in the azz...while they were politicking a non issue our future of our habitat was just getting over looked by selfish morons .......

This is what happens when no one has BallZ

2 totally seperate issues.

This bill was apparently kept quiet or someone fell asleep at the wheel. (Not pointing fingers)

Been involved in the process enough to know the ins and outs.

Dan Morish said last year he was going to push a bill to change this.....I know Dan personally ....me and his son Chris are good friends and Dan is a friend of our family...

I disagree what he has done and he knows it but guess what.... I don't have time to go protest on main street and say I'm poor and can't feed my family with out oysters....

The whole deal the 1st time should of been tong only and all the permits would be fine

And the 15 trout lobby pushing crew are not going to touch this........ Because this has facts and real life changes...

La local Politics at its finest

Bluechip 04-27-2012 09:22 PM

Maybe the Sportsmen in Dans district will get together and vote him out unless he is term limited and cashing in favors.

Gerald 04-28-2012 12:29 AM

I did a little research......

Here is something I found: http://legis.la.gov/lss/lss.asp?doc=285480

Quote:

C. The commission shall fix the open season for oyster harvest in Calcasieu Lake, which shall begin on any date between October fifteenth and November first and shall end on April thirtieth. However, in consultation with the Calcasieu Oyster Task Force, the commission may open or close the season as biological data indicate a need and may manage East Cove and West Cove separately.
D.(1) After considering the recommendations by the Calcasieu Oyster Task Force, the commission shall set the harvest limit so that each permittee may harvest an amount not to exceed twenty-five sacks of oysters per day from one, and only one, licensed vessel. In addition, one and only one permittee may harvest from each licensed vessel per day and no vessel shall be used for more than one trip per day.
So it looks like the LDWF can set the limit on how long the season is open. If this power is used, the LDWF Commisson can shutdown the season when it is determined that no more oysters should be taken from Big Lake.
