window tint

Anyone have legal tint on there cars and how dark is it? I have an f150, and I want to have the front windows tinted to match the others. Has anyone done this? Is the tint legal? If it isnt, has anyone had issues with being pulled over for tint?

Top Dawg 07-08-2012 07:32 PM

I tinted my windows dark when I bought my truck in '06. Never been pulled over for it.

southern151 07-08-2012 07:32 PM

I'm pretty sure 35% is all that is legal on front Windows. Most privacy glass installed at tye factory is 20%(darker).

SaltyShaw 07-08-2012 07:34 PM

The rear of most trucks are 20%
I used to have 5% all the way around and got hassled by the cops pretty regularly, i pulled it all off left the 20% on the back and matched the front windows with 20% and havent got a ticket in 3 years. It is illegal but they usually dont mess with you if they can see you through the glass.
Also another thing they look for when giving tint tickets is an eyebrow, it is a dead giveaway that you have custom tint and they target that. So with that being said DO NOT get an eyebrow on the front windshield and you should be ok.

Top Dawg 07-08-2012 07:36 PM

I had an eyebrow for several years til I had to change my windshield. I never got hassled but my tint wasn't limo. Guess I was just lucky. I will say I did like the eyebrow just for blocking the sun. But I'm pretty sure the eyebrow is illegal.

50% is the legal limit now, most trucks will take 20% to match the darkness of the factory rear tint. I just pulled my 5% off an put 20% on the front doors and matches perfect.

Some get by with it some dont all depends on the mood of the cop that day but it is a huge give away when they see the eyebrow and thats what they look for. I was told that by a state trooper
It is extremely nice to have for sun blockage but id rather flip down the visor or put on my glasses vs payin a $200 plus ticket

They arent exactly legal but there is a small black line on most windshields and that is as far as the brow can go down to be legal and its only about 3-4" wide

mcjaredsandwich 07-08-2012 07:48 PM

5% tint so you can't see up in my window..

madjap 07-08-2012 07:51 PM

You can have an eyebrow that extends down 5" from the top of the windshied. Also the front windows can be 40%, the rear windows can be 25%, and the windows on the back can be 12%.

PUREBAY2200 07-08-2012 07:53 PM

I had limo all the way around and 35% on my windshield n high school..... Never got hassled; I was lucky.
In college I had 20% all around and got a ticket ; this was n ruston, la. Not for the tint but the strip on my windshield.... It was 6 inches.... Cop said no more then 4.
So I got it fixed.

After college I went with 20% and no front strip.
I've don't this on 3 more tricks and had no issues.
But some "inspection" places will not give a tag ; they will pull out the meter and if the meter shows less then 40% it's a no go.

That used to only apply to cars . . . . . apparently now its all vehicles
Whish is retarted because they come from the manufacturer with 20% on rear and side windows:confused:
The brow is 3-4" for sure its different in different vehicles but i know for fact its nothing over 4"

SaltyShaw 07-08-2012 08:26 PM

I think it is called the AS1 line on the windshield, brow cannot be lower than that line

Montauk17 07-08-2012 09:00 PM

All tint places should know what is legal and will tell you, but you can go darker at your own risk.

madjap 07-09-2012 02:40 PM

(1) A sun screening device when used in conjunction with automotive safety glazing materials on the front side window, with a light transmission of at least forty percent, all tolerances included, side window behind the driver with a light transmission of at least twenty-five percent, all tolerances included, and rearmost windows with a light transmission of at least twelve percent, all tolerances included. All sun screening devices shall not have a luminous reflectance of more than twenty percent.
(2) A transparent material, not red or amber in color, affixed to the topmost portion of the windshield not to extend more than five inches down from the top.

I had a car back in the day with 2.5% all the way around with a brow that went 12" in the middle. I got pulled over for it in a little town where the cops like to write tickets finally though. they reduced the fine if I took it off

Mako19 07-09-2012 04:31 PM

Window tint keeps the sun off of you and looks good if applied correctly. However, that one time when the cop wants to write a silly ticket may just be the night you had a few beers over dinner and are above the legal limit. It just gives them a reason to pull you over. Several of my friends have been pulled over for tint and it turned into several thousands of dollars worth of lawyers and fines. Not worth is IMO.

It also makes for great probable cause to stop a car when I want to locate some dope while working the streets protecting society. You know the drill, stop them for window tint, then they have to let me put a meter on it, then I smell the weed they were burning in the blunt, then I find the gun under the seat, then we get a search warrant for the house, then we find the mother load of crack, then we find another gun used in a murder.........yep, cops are just out to hassle people for illegal windo tint!!

PC. Just like that license plate light that is burnt. Just make sure that you ticket them for that when you find the BIG STUFF.;)

I tinted my windows on every vehicle I have ever owned and always go with the darkest tint I can and still be legal. Would I like it to be darker, YES, but it does the job and I don't get stopped for the tint or get any problems when getting an inspection! Plus the few times my mom(green) has rode with me and she looks out the side window and says "it is getting dark over there, I didn't know we were supposed to have rain today".:*****:

FFF,
Why are LEO vehicles allowed to have limo tint? and i'm not talking about units .personal vehicles and the ones w/ ghost plates. Politicians in state vehicles have limo tint ?
i understand that it's great for PC but wy to many folks have it that have no reason to.
