Fire ants

I have fire ants that all of the poisons I have tried will not kill. Any ideas?

Father in law swears by dumping a 2 litre jug of club soda on em. I've never tried it though.

kcinnick 08-26-2012 10:34 PM

Hot pot of water, closer to boiling the better. I have sacrificed grass with crawfish/crab boil water to kill them, but just plain water works too. You have to pour enough to get through the system and flood all the tunnels.

this is gonna sound crazy but we were in grandisle at the camp and a buddies kid kept stepping in the fire ant mpounds , all i had was a gallon of concentrated simple green cleaner....screw it . dumped it on a few mounds and watched em crawl out and stop in thier trcks about 3' off the hill . next day went and disturbed the same mounds and nothing

Tal-Star granules. I can do my yard twice with a 50 lb sack and it last 6 months each application. Little less if it rains a lot.

cmcnabb 08-26-2012 10:57 PM

Soak mound in gas then light

ScubaLatt 08-26-2012 11:06 PM

acephate

Have you tried Acephate?

speck-chaser 08-27-2012 12:00 AM

bifenthrin, which is the active ingredient in talstar is some really good stuff. It not only kills fire ants, but many other insects too. I sell a good bit at my nursery. Another good one is called Extinguish. Its a lil more expensive but very effective. It is a bait that attracts them, the workers feed it to the queen, it has a growth regulator in it and eventually kills the queen in several days, then eventually the whole nest dies after the queen goes. A 1lb. jug will treat 1 acre. Usually only 2 applications per year, unless your having the rains we have been having. If you are in a hurry though, and need something quick, mix dish soap with water and that will kill just about anything that breathes through its abdomen. Its smothers them in seconds. Great on wasp nests, ants, spiders, earwigs, etc.

wetaline 08-27-2012 12:33 AM

x2 on the Talstar. I sprayed my yard with the liquid and have no ants, mosquitoes, spiders, roaches or cinch bugs. Works really great!!

jldsc 08-27-2012 12:34 AM

i had an old aunt that i used to help take care of that ha an old dog that she was scarred of using any kinds of poisons around....the only thing she ever used was raw unflavored grits....they take the grits to the queen and when they eat the grits the moisture builds up and their exoskeleton cannot expand so they kill over. Always worked for her.

saute86 08-27-2012 06:15 AM

For the pool owners try this. Take 1 cup of granulated chlorine 1 can of coke. Muraitic acidic works best. Make sure you are up wind. If this won't kill them nothing will.....lol.

Macattac 08-27-2012 07:31 AM

If you have several mounds, scoop some from one mound and put on another. They will kill each other.

I find this method to be most effective.

My neighbor can show you some scars and prove you otherwise.........all you need to do is pour gas on them, no need to light it.

I've heard that too but never tried it

HHenry1 08-27-2012 10:34 AM

gasoline and a match

Creole Fisherman 08-27-2012 10:36 AM

This pass year, I found common household bleach to be very effective killing mounds. Inexpensive as well

Jedi Lure Tricks 08-27-2012 12:42 PM

X100 on Talstar P. i got some this spring and it kills everything.... including fire ants and mosquitos!! it's $45 for 3/4 gallon but you only use about 1oz. mixed in 1 gallon of water.

kcinnick 08-27-2012 01:29 PM

I don't have an ant problem, but I have some areas that are 100% shade and resemble a forest bottom with layers of leaves from oak trees. It's quite nice, but there are roaches in there.

I want something to kill the roaches but I don't want to kill all the bugs, I like having the green Lizards around and they needs something to eat. Also, we have two pairs of cardinals nesting on my property and they both take their fledglings there every year to forage for food, but I think they are going after seeds, not roaches. I can't stand roaches, I have spray around my house a few times a year, but that doesn't keep everything out when it rains like it did last couple weeks.

SULPHITE 08-27-2012 01:32 PM

roaches will make me scream like a woman...not ashamed...nasty lil fuggers

weedeater 08-27-2012 01:34 PM

Get some Demon WP from feed store or hardware store and it will kill anything that trys to come in, spray it inside and outside of house around bottom, your eves, windows and doors

Pretty sure Demon is also Bifen based.

Them are some aggravating little buggers, just glad they don't stick around longer

southern151 08-27-2012 02:42 PM

I use the Bifen granules. Just apply a small amount to the top of the mound and surrounding area. They lose out pretty quick.

I used to have a semi-pet toad frog that lived on my back patio. He was a roach eating machine.
