flounder_smacker 08-28-2012 12:21 PM

Try autozone or pepboys. Bought 3 from autozone yesterday for 400 a piece. They are made well with 7 hp Honda clone engines. Couldn't find out who makes the generator part but it looks identical to my generac.

Just noticed local rental place in Eunice just recieved a big shipment. About 1 1/2 hrs from Baton Rouge. Not sure of the traffic that way but 190 is not bad if you are in desperate need.

eman 08-28-2012 01:29 PM

Thanks for the help guys. Found a 7500 w at Sams w/ Honda engine and electric start .
Found a 5500 at Lowes w/ brigs engine & pull start for $799 the one at Sams was only $999.

swamp snorkler 08-28-2012 01:30 PM

Sorry Bob, maybe call industrial welding supply, my neighbor picked up a DeWalt from them.

Hopefully you don't need it.

Make sure you have extra oil....they usually come with it but they want you to change it after it runs for the first 5-10 hours.

ckinchen 08-28-2012 01:35 PM

I know you guys all know this but I would feel bad if something happened and I did not say this.

Make sure you let the generators cool down before adding fuel. My stepdad had a good friend of his suffer 3rd degree burns by refueling a hot generator.

And then every 20 hours after that.

LPfishnTIM 08-28-2012 03:42 PM

Fastenal will have generators after the storm, most closed early today and will be closed tomorrow. and if your buying a generator get one with a honda motor before you get a briggs and stration.

jdm4x43732 08-28-2012 05:15 PM

"H" 08-28-2012 05:39 PM

industrial supply companies start selling to public during emergencies, but there prices are a little higher but they can get just about anything for you and as much as you want!

i see a lot of reports on the site about the maintance of the generator. I have seen many people post that they change the oil every 20 hours. Is this just personal preference or is that in your manuals. I just bought a 5000 Genrac and was reading the maintance schedule last night. It says to change the oil after 30 hours when new. Then change the oil every 100 hours or every season. I wouldn't wait till 100 hours but is every 20 hours really needed?? just want your opions.

Small engine running almost nonstop keeping you cools and freezer frozen....... what's a case of oil worth to you if it burns up?

jdm4x43732 08-29-2012 11:13 AM

I like to keep extra oil, inline fuel filters and a few extra spark plugs on hand. I usually change mine every two days, which is around 36 hrs. We run it a few hrs dueling the day on the freezers and all night on A/C.

Please tell me you have a way to isolate this set up so that you aren't
back feeding to the grid???

kyle35 08-29-2012 11:30 AM

I have a generac also and it says every 100 hours for an oil change but I'll do it prolly every other day when/if we lose power. I'm at my nlaws in St. Amant b/c they have no trees and we still have power.

I do mine every 20 hours and oil is black and broken down. Went to synthetic and works much better as far as breaking the oil down. I would do it as much as needed. Easy to do and quick

I have never owned a generac. How does a 5000 model handle the load? Can it easly handle the frig, 2 chest freezer and portable ac unit. I dont plan to put the gas in and use it unless I have to. How is the noise on it? Is it comparable to a honda?

Big Flounder 08-29-2012 01:12 PM

Mine has a digital gauge on it and tells you when it's time to change the oil.

I have used several Generac. None of them even came close to a honda. They are expensive for a reason- they make a great generator and quiet. Several claim to be quiet but I have not seen a portable yet that can compete with Honda. Generac makes nice larger generators, smaller ones are made much cheaper than their larger ones

If anyone in Raceland needs a generator Raceland AG has one left. get in touch with me and I'll get you in touch with the owner.

swamp snorkler 08-29-2012 02:25 PM

I have a 5500 Briggs & Stratton and I run a small freezer 2 Ice boxes and a windows unit along with my TV and a 5000 Btu window unit. Just can't start every thing at once.

Loneshark 08-29-2012 02:31 PM

Honda of Lafayette has plenty of generators and they are open I any one needs one.

Garfish 08-29-2012 08:58 PM

Talked to my brother in Galvez and he lost power for about an hour or so. When he was about to start the generator, the electricity came back on. He still has power as of a few minutes ago. Talked to my Mom in BR, and she's had power all day and still has it. Hoping and praying for all y'all that are going through this.

Eman, you heard from your brother?

Catcher'sMitt 08-29-2012 09:15 PM

eman have you found a generator? If not pro power on airline and industrialplex had gotten some in right before the storm. a buddy of mine owns it and can find out if they have any and hold one for you.

eman 08-29-2012 10:05 PM

Got one , thanks

I got the 2.5 ton stake bed truck here today .If y'all need help getting anything moved let me know. don't know that i will have it tomorrow.

Backwards Kid's Mom 08-30-2012 10:00 AM

We won't need to move anything....our house is high and dry but thank you! May have some challenges getting around depending on what the rivers do. Just praying for those who may flood while everyone else is moving on and acting like this is over.
