Teal report

What are you guys seeing in the various general areas? Our club in Texas is very concerned with the lack of birds at this point with no weather change leading into Saturday. I planned to hunt in El Campo on Saturday due to a baseball game but I may sneak over to my spot in pine island.

Top Dawg 09-10-2013 08:14 AM

I haven't heard any good reports. There are a couple spotty rice fields holding a few birds but nothing like this time last year. Rode to Johnson bayou last week worked in the marsh then drove to thornwell after that. Didn't see one teal. With no weather change and the full moon on the 19th it might be a slow weekend for a lot of ppl.

MarshRat89 09-10-2013 08:26 AM

Saw about 50-60 early last week in Gueydan. Last week we were seeing less than 10 birds a day at our place in Kaplan. I was out there for shooting time on Sunday and didn't see a one. Went Brush a blind yesterday afternoon late and same thing. I'm worried at this point. If your taking about pine island south of Kaplan Casey I went do a job out that way yesterday. Saw two off 693 and that was it.

jpcajun 09-10-2013 08:46 AM

Heard of a couple fields NW of Crowley that were stacked... from what was said, these couple fields are loaded every year and hardly ever get hunted. Went to our field this past weekend north of Kaplan and saw a few... not as many as I saw a week ago.

I've heard of a FEW good reports. Overall though, as far as farms that are historically loaded this time of year, it's not looking so hot. They'll be here though, nothing wrong with a good push in the middle of the season. I'd rather this than have them all here at the beginning of the month.

noodle creek 09-10-2013 09:52 AM

And we don't need fronts to push them. Fronts do help out a little, but they are photo-migrators. They start heading south when the days start getting shorter, not totally reliable upon the weather

Top Dawg 09-10-2013 09:54 AM

No. But a north wind does help. I look for a good push next week when that moon swells up

noodle creek 09-10-2013 10:03 AM

For sure

Had buddies hunting in Arkansas this past weekend. Didn't kill a bird. Last year they smashed em everyday. Too dry in southeastern Arkansas. Game warden checked them Sunday and told them he hadn't talked to anyone who had killed any birds.

all star rod 09-10-2013 10:10 AM

Checked out my lease South of Kaplan. I go there about 6pm to check out our water level since the landowner started to pump on WED. I saw several big flocks flying from North to South and others flying from East to West.

Spunt Drag 09-10-2013 11:20 AM

Sounds like I made a good decision to go run dogs in TX this weekend instead of hunt. Good luck to everyone, I haven't heard any good reports.

BIG-C 09-10-2013 11:58 AM

No big concentrations in the Ville Platte area, too dry not nearly the amount of water as last year.

Tete Dur 09-10-2013 12:04 PM

But wouldn't it being dry like everyone is saying help out those that have water? Still, people with water aren't seeing many birds. I hope they get here soon. I can only hunt the first 7 days then I will be stuck at work.

Tete, teal season is by far my favorite. Here is my 2 pennies on the drought effect. When we have a ton of rain and water everywhere, the bird hit pastures and spread out. When we have conditions like this, the birds find little pot holes, or flooded cuts but the "area" doesn't hold as many birds. If you are the only farm in 5 miles to have a "cut" flooded, after those first few shots, those birds are moving out. Then you have to wait, and hope! We will have birds, it just might not be as fast as years past.

mstulb 09-10-2013 02:37 PM

Gove cove sat to work on our blinds and few groups of blacks but no teal

I always thought so but now I don't know, we've had water since January and we have no teal.

Where about in morse? That's where we have a few blinds and I been running around checking all the fields almost everyday and haven't saw anything. 2 blinds just getting water but 1 been having for about a week or so. Nothing in them.

homerun 09-10-2013 06:23 PM

Teal fly 30mph. so when people start going to blinds in the fields and running in the marsh them teal will be spreading everywhere in an hour or 2. PATIENCE

SULPHITE 09-10-2013 07:26 PM

Could be worse, could not be hunting teal season at all...

Kenner18 09-10-2013 07:32 PM

Just in ----All teal are on Sabine Lake catching trout, redfish and flounder . They will not be participating in teal season this year due to all the fish they are catching on Sabine lake now.

jlincecum 09-10-2013 07:42 PM

ole man said we had a few thousand last week but he hardly saw any today

I feel exactly. It's almost a sense of happiness not to see them "holding" in our areas. When gunfire rings out..."here dey come"

bgizzle 09-10-2013 08:01 PM

Good reports west of crowley

Big pond 09-10-2013 08:33 PM

Went to my lease in the burns little chenier area last Friday not one teal but it can change in a hurry

cajunforeman 09-10-2013 09:10 PM

I've called just about every one I knew today. The reports seem to be very spotty. My dads lease has held a enormous about of teal the last 3 years and not one bird was spotted today. This is probably my favorite time of year with football season just starting and the smell of gun powder in air. The tigers haven't disappointed us yet so let's hope the teal won't either.

Bdub 09-10-2013 09:31 PM

I'm headin to Grand Chenier Thursday night, gonna hit the marsh real early Friday morning for a bit and see if any birds are around. Seen a good amount of spoonies and some greys a couple weeks ago, had just enough water to pole to my teal blind. This was also mid day/afternoon so hopefully we got some teal in the morning come Saturday..

Did you know Gw teal have been clocked at speeds in excess of 100mph? Interesting duck fact. Not trying to be a smarta** just thought about it when u said 30mph.

Man that's crazy. Only bad reports except one I've heard came from here. Everyone I've talked to with exception of 2 or three have been ricefields but even the few marsh reports have been good. That's crazy. What time y'all making rounds?

This may ease people's minds. The only spot I've heard they didn't see any birds was intracoastal but we never see birds there when we work on blinds. But come opening day they thick.

bgizzle 09-10-2013 09:57 PM

This is my .02.... We are obviously alot drier than past few yrs. so marshes will have less water and farmers may not flood fields unless they absolutely have to bc it costs so much. With that said if teal have a harder time finding water with food nearby(marsh/crawfish ponds) it's a no brainer for them to Hang out where they kill two birds with one stone and have water and food in a ricefield. They just hanging out there. When ppl scare them out with 4wheelers and shot fire off. They gonna go to next field boom shot at again then they go to marsh and boom everybody happy but the teal.... ;)

jpcajun 09-10-2013 10:03 PM

I have been out to my field north of Kaplan... saw some a couple weeks ago and this past weekend saw just a few. Gotta head out there in the morning so I plan on getting out there before sunrise to see whats flying around in the morning... maybe they are moving then.

Top Dawg 09-10-2013 10:12 PM

Heard a report of a good bit still in the Dakota's.

"W" 09-11-2013 12:23 AM
