If you look at the first line of the riddle it states that at 3 am you are awoken.
That means the first thing you open is your eyes?????

Er, you're already awake and you've already determined it is the in-laws.

The first thing you OPENED (past tense) was your eyes.

The first thing you OPEN (present tense) is probably the door.
