Your favorite tomato variety?
I always forget and plant about 5-6 varieties and never really do a taste test. Last night at Lowes was looking at them all, no idea which is really better.
I need some :help: What your fav variety for the best tasting, white bread real mayo tomato slab samich? I'm talkin no meat, just tomatoes, so it needs to be the best! :D This would be for south La gardens, and available locally.... |
I'm a fan of celebrities. Did better boy creole celebrities and early girls last year. This year will be doing straight celebrities. Also I find that nursery a have better plants that say lowes or stine
|
Supersweet 100s for salads. Any big vine ripened homegrown tomato for slicing on sandwiches and burgers. Taste wise, the gap between home and store is much bigger than between home varieties.

"Dro" tomatos
|
celebrities are the ones I have had the best luck with.
|
for a tomato sammich,,,,,beefmaster , 1 good thick slice covers the bread....only thing is you have a lot of culls,,,,tomatoes that are not uniform in shape.....but the big ones are worth it for a sammich.....my biggest was 2 pounds and what didn't go on the sammich i ate with salt sprinkle on......also had fried sac-a-lait fillet on sammich......

I'll second the super sweet 100s. They grew to the top of the conduit and they kept growing back towards the ground when I couldn't tie them any higher. They are the closest two in the picture. For reference that is a 10' conduit about 2 feet in the ground. I was picking 15-20 per plant everyday to every other day once it got to about the size in the picture.
I had a lot less success with better boy and creoles. |
Dat dere's niice.

I once planted 10 sweet 100's and was getting over a gallon or two a day. They supplied enough for a restaurant. Each time I trimmed them they would come back with a vengeance. Be careful where you plant them they will take over your garden.

Bingo, come check out our tomatoes at the nursery. Everybody is really liking how good they look. Celebrity, early girl, better boy, sweet 100, laroma, superfantastic, bhn 589, bhn 640, Peppers, eggplants, cucumbers should be here tomorrow. |
speck-chaser...where is this nursery?
Also, any other nurseries around Lafayette? I'm not really familiar with these places. Last year I went to All Seasons here, but they had very little veg plants. |
Can the sweet 100s and celebrities be planted in 5 gallon buckets or do they get too big? I don't have time to till a garden, but my youngin loves tomatoes. It would be nice to walk outside and pick him some.

I like the Celebs for second best but if you can find Jet-Star give it a try. This Tomato produces even in very hot temps and most of the summer; med size, very sweet. Chastant's in Lafay carries them.

Your favorite tomato variety?
Cherry tomater is producing more than they can eat. Creole tomater has some big pretty green specimens. We'll see how bad they crack when they start to ripen.
My second and third bell pepper plants are growing beautifully. One had a flower today. First of the year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
My arkansas travelers are fianally starting to put on some tomatoes. Our cherries are loaded. Found a few yellow ones today so it wont be long. The arkansas are are growing great now that the heat is up. They seem to love it when its hot. We got a super late start this year. 3rd weekend in May we got down to 43 up here. The winter just wouldn't go away.
