Talk to ya grandpas about trout fishing. They had a choice between a spoon a speck rig or a white tout tail . w/ a rod and reel that may cast 50feet. most had no motor on the boat . yet they caught plenty trout.
I had this discussion w/ some fishermen at the past time last week.
Trout are animals, trout are not intelligent. they think of 3 things .
Food ,comfort and making little trout. That's it! We as fishermen make it harder than it is. What makes it hard to catch fish is the fisherman. maybe not you ,it may be the idiot who runs right through a school of trout when chasing birds. It may be the guy who doesn't understand that you can't stomp around in the boat and make a bunch of noise. It may be the guy who has more money than sense and buys a $40k boat but has no clue on how to operate that boat to optamize his chances on catching fish.
But it could also be you and me Trying to figure out which of the 2000 lures of 300 different colors that we can MAKE the trout bite today?
For me , i bank fish or wade and have been doing it long enough to understand that the fish will be in certain places at certain times of the year. they are not swimming miles away to feed. they will feed in that location some time during the day. All i can do is try to understand what conditions will cause them to feed and be there when they do. You can pull up to an area in your boat and make 15 cast w/ no bites and leave and drive 5 miles to another spot and do the same thing w/ the same results. You may miss the bite in the spot by 10 min. or 2 hrs ,but you still miss the bite. You can miss the bite all day long or you may get lucky and hit a spot when the fish decide to feed . Now you can say you found the fish???
No you lucked up and found feeding fish. but ya spent half a day and 20 gallons of gas doing it.
Most of us know areas well enough to know when the area holds fish.
We just don't have the patience to wait for the fish to feed like our ancestors did.
