Calm Winds & Big Fish for 26th Annual Lake Charles CCA Trout Shoot Out

Most fishermen will agree that this spring has been one of the windiest in recent memory. The weather for the 26th Annual Lake Charles CCA Trout Shoot Out, held Saturday at Calcasieu Point Landing, couldn’t have been more opposite. As a result, over 350 adult anglers and over 500 youth anglers registered and fished the Shoot Out.

This marked the 7th year the tournament has been held at Calcasieu Point Landing to promote C.P.R. (Catch Photo Release). This year the tournament successfully released 55% of the entries back to the water with help from experts with The Aquarium of the America’s, who used their own secret formula of oxygen, cool water, and Gatorade to help revive the captured trout. They then tagged the fish before releasing them back into the water.

“I think it says a lot about our great fishery that so many anglers are so committed to preserving their fishing habitat,” said Raymond Little, Tournament Director for the Shoot Out. “Anytime you can release over 50% of the fish back into the water is a great thing.”

“The youth anglers were really excited to be able to see their fish swim off to fight another day. The tournament was a great success! If you do happen to catch a tagged trout, please take down the info from the tag, measure the fish, and release it to fight another day. This tagging system helps us track growth rates and migration movements of these fish. The more data we can receive on trout, the better our understanding of this species will become,” Little said.

Once again, the winning anglers took advantage of the live bonus to leap frog their competition and capture the top spots in their respective divisions. Cody Vidrine claimed first place in the adult division with a 6.46 pound trout winning himself $5,000 cash thanks to CITGO. Ryan Logan won a $2,000 Education IRA from Whitney Bank with his 5.83 pound trout for 1st place in the youth division, along with a new rod & reel. Both fish were released to fight another day.
