personally, i like lace ups. they strap on tighter, and you're more agile than with slip ons. (of course if you have no need to be agile, you're gonna have slip ons)

wipe them down with mink oil and wear and repeat a few times and they will get soft, I have put a pair in the washing machine then wipe down with mink oil and it worked good. I have heard of common them with water then wearing but I don't do the wet feet thing.
