I'll put any scope on my rifles, as long as it is a Leupold. I've had a 4.5 x 14 50mm on one of my deer rifles since 1997 and it has never let me down. 4.5 is fine for stuff inside of 100 yards, and you can turn it up to 14 for longer range deer and the occasional varmint.

I agree with the other folks who recommend going with Leupold mounts. Once in a while I'll go with another top end brand, but steel and quality are the order for heavy recoil. I think when I haven't used Leupold, I've put the three ring steel mounting rig on Encores and Contenders. I've also been known to put four steel rings on slug guns and heavy recoiling muzzleloaders. But two good steel Leupold rings is plenty for a .300 magnum.
