I have seen some so bad that the only way to clean it was to sand blast it. Did you check the thermostat? On a carb motor I would get rid of the thermostat all together. They are useless in south louisiana. You can't just take the whole thing out,the backing plate needs to stay in the housing. To do that take some cutting pliers and gut the thermostat taking the spring and metel arms that hold the spring in place off.

yes we already did that, all i have is a metal plate with hole in it for thermostat.
