About 60 to 70 yards of line is all that you should ever need. But reel do cast better if the spool is full of line.
I have caught many 25# reds on 12 or 15 lb mono.
Only time I needed 100 yards was when I caught a ~25 # Red on 10 lb mono. That sucker took a long time to get it to the boat.
