I spent almost 5 hours up there back in ~'93.

I was coming back from scouting at Sherburne. I think it was in Aug. but not sure. It started raining after I crossed the Wiskey Bay Pilot channel bridge. Then I stated seeing vehicles brake lights way up in front of me. I was pulling my boat and got in the middle of the road and started weaving side to side to let the people behind me know to slow down. After I finally came to a stop, people in front of me were getting out [remember it was raining] to try to look up the road.

Then about 30 seconds later there was a loud "bang"......yep, a 1 ton truck could not stop about 200 yards behind me. The first wreck was 3 cars that crashed up near the Atchafalaya river bridge.....3 dead there. The wreck behind me, the truck hit a horse trailer. The guy with the horse trailer had just bought a horse for several thousand dollar and it was killed.

Then about a mile behind me there was another bad wreck. A car caught on fire and I think it was 4 people killed. That car was still burning when we finally started moving almost 5 hours later. There were probably 20+ minor collisions and the news report was 96 vehicles were damaged. The west bound lane did not open until the next afternoon.

This was about 4 PM and it was very hot. But having been scouting that day, I had an ice chest with a couple of drinks and some food so I was a lot better off than most.
