I'm no expert on fly fishing but from what i know, you can use as light as a 6 weight rod if your catching smaller bass on smaller flies / streamers. or use up to a 9 weight for throwing the bigger bass bug flies & streamers. I would imagine a good combo weight would be either a stout 8 or 9 weight rod. Its not so important for bass but for red's I would want a rod with real good long distance castability.

Use a weight forward line, I think you can actually buy line that is weighted forward appropriately for bass bug type flies....

IMO the reel on a fly rod is really just there to hold the line so.... just pick up an inexpensive one thats weighted well for the rod you buy.

Pick yourself a nice calm afternoon, and get out there on some skinny water and have a blast.
