BIG! No seriously, the females get really big. There are some in the museum at UL Monroe that don't even look real. Probably close to 5 feet but the girth is what is impressive. There is a beast of one at Lake Martin if you go past the boat ramp and head down to the first gate, there is a pile of rocks with a pipe on the lake side and she hangs out on those rocks.
Yellow-bellied watersnakes can get pretty big too, the other watersnakes are generally not as big.

Caught a yellow-bellied ws out of my parents flowerbed a few weekends back. That sucker was probably 3 foot long. Mom was freaking out. I went Crocodile Hunter on it for a bit. "Calm down little fella, I'm not gonna hurt ya." My parents thought I was crazy. Apparently the snake didn't care for that sweet talk either, but I won that fight. Guess my friends have been calling me croc hunter too long.
