Mud engineers do pretty well, but the chemistry that goes into drilling mud is very in depth. Most of the mud engineers I work with we're either chemistry or petrochemical majors in college.
I had thought about going into it, but decided on m/lwd instead. Less time offshore and the opportunities that come after a career in mwd are endless. The paycheck is better on the lwd side also. If you've got a college degree, you've got a pretty good shot at it. There are alot of small companies that are starting up right now.
