it doesn't have to be a treble hook, and it doesn't have to be a big one either. sometimes i cut a barb off. if u hook the mullet right in the nose the barbs just ride along the mullets head and i've had good sucess with that system, but i am always trying to find new ideas.
most of the time the hook is in their gut and as long as it grabs something, the gar will move along the path to least resistance.
the real fight is when u get the gar alongside the boat.
