I'm sorry for your loss.
The fishing and the small town atmosphere in LC are really like nowhere else on earth. All the great outdoors stuff is so close, the food is awesome, and the folks are all friendly.
Baton Rouge was ok in the 1980s, but even then the really good food was more expensive and harder to find. Things gradually got worse (traffic, prices, crime, service) until 2005, when the Katrina refugees pushed the city off of the cliff.
Don't get me wrong, I'll take BR over any similarly sized city in the US, but it seems like Katrina brought many of the bad features of NO without the advantages, like the great food or the great service in the service industries.
