Drop Shot vs Carolina Rig
Sounds like a bass fishing discussion but we use Carolina rigs for saltwater too.
Lately, I have been using a drop shot rig with good success.
I think it has a few advantages over the Carolina rig.
For one it keeps your bait off the bottom and out of any mud that your weight might be stirring up. Also I think that I can feel the bite better because you are in direct contact with your bait. I rig a drop shot rig by tying a knot at the end of my line then crimping a split shot or two just above the knot. About a foot or so above that I tie a hook directly to the line with a Palomar knot. If the split shot gets hung you can pull it off and re-rig quickly. This works well with plastics when the trout are finicky but you will loose some plastic. I have also been having success at night free-lining mullets on nothing but a hook. Just a couple of things to try when it gets slow.
