I still prefer cracked crab. After catching three bull reds on crab in 22 minutes yesterday, we managed three more on cut mullet over the next couple of hours. But we noticed that every crab was a solid hookup and a landed fish. We probably had more fish spit out the mullet as we had solid hook ups. My son thinks redfish just swallow and work their pharangeal teeth when they feel sharp points when eating crab, but start trying to spit out the mullet when they feel the hook.
We've caught a few bull reds on shrimp over the years, but most of the summer, catfish won't let shrimp stay in the water long enough for a bull red to find it.
